The clay mill in Ditzingen

The Glemsmühlen are or were mills on the Glems in Baden-Württemberg .

On the Enz tributary, the Glems, mills have been built in many places over the centuries; the first documented mentions date from the 12th century. Originally they were powered by water wheels, which were largely replaced by turbines in the early 20th century.

Some of the flour mills are still running today, while others were converted into homes or completely demolished in the 20th century. In some places, flour is still milled from grain from the region according to an old tradition. Often the visitor can shop in an associated shop or take part in a tour by appointment.

In recent years, some of the Glemsmühlen have participated in supraregional projects, for example in September 2004 on the Open Monument Day or in July 2009 in the “The Waters of the Neckar” project in the Stuttgart region . On these days, cultural events took place in the rooms of the mills involved and guided tours were offered.

Glemsmühlenweg

Signpost on Glemsmühlenweg

The “Grünes Strohgäu working group has set up a mill trail along the Glems in order to improve the local recreational opportunities in the Stuttgart region and, in particular, to increase the attractiveness of the Glemstal and to illustrate the history of the mills and their former importance. The official opening took place on June 17, 2001. The path leads past 19 mills. An information board is set up on each one, giving an insight into the history of the respective mill.

The cycling and hiking trail leads from Glemseck near Leonberg for about 40 km through the natural Glemstal via Ditzingen , Korntal-Münchingen , Hemmingen and Schwieberdingen to Markgröningen-Unterriexingen , where the Glems flows into the Enz . The path is signposted throughout. The route runs mainly on paved roads, partly on paved forest paths or gravel paths. With the exception of the steep ascent near Talhausen just before the mouth of the Glems, there are no major inclines to overcome. Between Talhausen and Unterriexingen there is also a hiking trail close to the shore without inclines, but not suitable for cycling. The tour is suitable for every age group, can be traveled in both directions and even untrained people can do it in one day. In Unterriexingen you have a connection to the Enztal cycle path, which is also signposted . Holding to the left (towards Vaihingen / Enz) it is possible to see the Glems estuary.
