The Gmina Sztutowo [ 'gmina ʂtuˈtɔvɔ ] is a rural community in the powiat Nowodworski in the Polish Pomeranian Voivodeship . It has an area of 107.5 km², on which 3657 people live (June 30, 2019). Their seat is the village of the same name ( German : Stutthof ).
geography
The rural community is located in Pomerania in the Żuławy Wiślane (Vistula-Nogat Delta) at the foot of the Mierzeja Wiślana (Fresh Spit) . The landscape south of the Spit and the Baltic Sea coast is determined by the landscape of the Kampen , a multitude of small islands that lie in the delta of the Königsberg and Elbinger Vistula . In the west are the small towns of Nowy Dwór Gdański (Tiegenhof) , the seat of the Powiat and Nowy Staw (Neuteich) . 32 percent of the area is used for agriculture, 17% is forest, part of the Zalew Wiślany (Fresh Lagoon) is a municipality. The eastern part of the spit belongs to the city of Krynica Morska (Kahlberg) as far as the Russian border .
history
Until the first division of Poland , the municipality belonged to the city of Danzig . In 1773 Stutthof came to the Kingdom of Prussia and the Province of West Prussia . Due to the provisions of the Versailles Treaty , the area came to the Free City of Danzig ( Danziger Niederung district ) after the First World War in 1920 .
Even before the attack on Poland , the later Stutthof concentration camp was established near Stutthof . The last fighting took place here in World War II , Stutthof was only captured by the Red Army after the surrender and subsequently fell to Poland .
From 1975 to 1998 the rural community belonged to the Elblag Voivodeship . Originally, the municipality extended to the Russian border. On April 1, 1991, the eastern part with Krynica Morska became a separate municipality.
There are plans to build a canal through the spit near Skowronki (Vogelsang) .
