Gniewkowo [ ɡɲefˈkɔvɔ ] ( German 1879-1920 and 1939-1945 Argenau , historically Knipig ) is a town in the powiat Inowrocławski of the Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship in Poland . It is the seat of the town-and-country municipality of the same name with around 14,600 inhabitants.
history
Historians assume that Gniewkowo received city rights in 1268 . In 1287 the Duchy of Kujawy, with its seat in Inowrazlaw, was divided among the duke's three sons; the youngest Casimir III. of Kujawien became the duke of a duchy Gniewkowo . In 1322 this duchy was occupied by the Crusader Order and returned in 1343.
Several fire disasters occurred in the 16th century, the one in 1582 being particularly devastating.
From 1772 to 1807 and from 1815 Gniewkowo belonged to Prussia , from January 17, 1920 it belonged again to Poland .
