The Goethe Square is a historical place in Bremen in the district center at today's cultural district in the so-called quarter . It bears the name of the poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe .
The streets on the square were u. a. named as Am Wall after the Bremer Wallanlagen , Contrescarpe after the embankment of the moat opposite the Wall, Ostertorsteinweg after the Ostertor ( East Gate ) in the former Bremen city fortifications , St. Pauli Passage after the Paulskloster and Bleicherstraße , as the bleaching took place here.
history
With the construction of the Bremen city wall in 1238, the east (er) gate was also built. One path, later the Ostertorsteinweg , led west, past the Paulskloster (1050–1523) and the later settlement of craftsmen and traders in the suburbs in front of the Ostertore or St. Pauli suburb . In the 17th century it was expanded as Steinstrasse ( Stenstrade ). In 1802/04 the wall was softened and redesigned as a park-like wall system. A small guard house was built. The two gate buildings were built in 1825/1828 and now serve as exhibition rooms, and in 1826 the Ostertorzwinger was demolished. The Bremen art gallery was built by 1849 .
The theater at Goetheplatz was completed in 1913 and with it the square in front of it.
The square was last redesigned around 1990.
Today (2017) it is a lively lounge area with several shops, planted with mobile planters. In warmer times, tables and chairs are set up in the Café Theatro .
