Gonzalo López Marañón
Gonzalo López Marañón OCD (born October 3, 1933 in Medina de Pomar , Burgos Province , Spain; † May 7, 2016 in Angola ) was a Catholic bishop and from 1970 to 2010 Apostolic Prefect and Apostolic Vicar of San Miguel de Sucumbíos .
Life
Gonzalo López Marañón entered the order of the Discalced Carmelites in Calahorra and made his first profession on August 13, 1950 in Burgo de Osma . He was ordained a priest on April 6, 1957 .
Pope Paul VI appointed him on June 26, 1970 Prefect of San Miguel de Sucumbíos in Ecuador. On July 2, 1984, with the elevation of the prefecture to the Apostolic Vicariate by Pope John Paul II, he was named Titular Bishop of Seleuciana and Apostolic Vicar of San Miguel de Sucumbíos . The Archbishop of Cuenca , Luis Alberto Luna Tobar OCD, donated him episcopal ordination on December 8th of the same year. Co- consecrators were the Bishop of Riobamba , Leonidas Proaño , and the Vicar Apostolic of Esmeraldas , Enrico Bartolucci Panaroni MCCJ .
He was considered to be very close to the people, committed to the poor and gained a reputation as an advocate for the indigenous population .
In October 2008 he submitted his resignation because he had reached the age limit, which was followed by an apostolic visitation in December 2009. On October 30, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI. resigned and appointed Rafael Ibarguren Schindler as administrator. This belongs to the religious community of Heralds of the Gospel or Clericalis Vitae Apostolicae Iuris Pontificii Virgo Flos Carmeli . Many believers protested against the appointment, including left-wing populist President Rafael Correa . On May 24, 2011, the bishop emeritus started an internationally acclaimed hunger strike in order to set a “sign of reconciliation” in the Apostolic Vicariate through his fast. López Marañón ended his hunger strike after 24 days. The Ecuadorian Bishops' Conference had previously ruled that both López Marañón's Carmelite Order and the Heralds of the Gospel had to leave the vicariate area.
