geography

The Gorom Islands are west of New Guinea , in the outer ribbon arc . Here they are between Seram Island about 40 km to the northwest and the Watubela Islands about 35 km to the southeast. To the northeast is the Seram Sea , to the southwest the Banda Sea .

The islands form the sub-district ( Kecamatan ) Pulau Gorom ( German  Gorominsel ), which belongs to the administrative district ( Kabupaten ) Ostseram ( Seram Bagian Timur ). The administrative district is part of the Maluku Province . Pulau Gorom is divided into eleven Desa ("villages").

The largest of the three islands is Gorom with the towns of Miran ( Miren ) on the east coast, Ondor ( Ondur ) in the north-west and Hur in the south-west. To the west is the island of Panjang with the town of Wisalem in the south and a little further south the island of Manawoka with the towns of Arbau in the north, Amar , Derra and finally Nama in the south.

population

27,285 inhabitants (2010) live on the islands. The Austronesian language Geser-Gorom is traditionally spoken on them , which is also spoken on the southeastern tip of Seram and the small islands between Seram and the Gorom Islands.
