The Indonesian Watubela Islands ( indon. Kepulauan Watubela , also Matabello Islands, locally Wakate ) consist of the main islands Watubela , Kasiui ( Kesui, Kasui ) and Teor ( Tioor ) and four other small, uninhabited islands. They belong to the South Moluccas .

The Watubela Islands are west of New Guinea , in the outer ribbon arch . About 40 km to the northwest are the Gorom Islands and behind them Seram and about 80 km to the south are the Kur and Kei Islands . To the east is the Seram Sea , to the west the Banda Sea .

The Watubela Islands form the sub-district ( Kecamatan ) Wakate , which belongs to the administrative district ( Kabupaten ) Seram Bagian Timur ( Eastern Seram section ) ( Maluku province ). Wakate is divided into nine Desa ("villages") and was formerly part of the Pulau Gorom sub-district .

The islands form a chain. All villages are located in the coastal area of ​​the islands.

The largest island is Kasiui with the places Gulir in the middle on the west coast, Utta ( Utah , Uta , Oeta ) on the north east coast and Tamher Timur ( Temeer Timur ) on the south coast. Other places on Kasiui are Tamher Barat ( Temeer Barat ) on the southwest coast, Kelangan ( Kalangan ) on the southeast coast and Amar Laut ( Amarlaut ) between Kelangan and Utta. Gulir is a fishing port and is not an independent desa. Administratively it belongs to Tamher Barat.

To the north is Watubela, the eponymous island of the archipelago, with the towns of Ilili on the northern tip, Effa on the west coast and Lahema in the south and a little further north is the island of Ingar ( Ingei ).

To the south is the second largest island Teor with the main town Wirmaf on the east coast and smaller hamlets, such as Rumahlusi on the north coast and Ralatlumoi on the west coast.

The small island of Baam lies between Teor and Kasiui and to the east of it is the island of Kurkap . To the east of Teor is also the island of uranium . Baam and uranium belong administratively to Teor, Kurkap to Desa Tamher Timur and Ingar to Desa Ilili. The total area of ​​the islands is 55.6 km².

Around the islands there are coral reefs and seagrass meadows, which are characterized by a high level of biodiversity . There are also mangrove forests, which are distributed in smaller areas on the coast of Kasiui.

9251 inhabitants live on the islands (2010). On Kasiui, the Watubela ( Wesi ) ethnic group speaks the Watubela language. The Watubela are predominantly Muslim, 25% are Christians. The language is in Teor Teor spoken. Both native languages ​​belong to the Austronesian languages , whereby Teor resembles more Kur from the neighboring island of the same name than Watubela.
