The Gossas department with the capital Gossas is one of 45 departments that make up Senegal and one of three departments that make up the Fatick region . It is located in western Senegal in the northeast of the elongated and elbow-shaped region of Fatick, which is angled from the Atlantic coast to the northeast inland.

In 2002 the department was reduced to the Arrondissement Taïf in the extreme northeast, which changed to the Mbacké department of the Diourbel region with an area of ​​410 km² . In 2008 the area around Guinguinéo , namely the then district Guinguinéo , supplemented by the Communauté rurale Ourour , carved out of the department and with an area of 1,166 square kilometers as a department Guinguinéo in the Kaolack region incorporated.
