Gotthard Oswald Marbach (pseudonym: Minor Silesius ; born April 13, 1810 in Jauer , Lower Silesia , † July 28, 1890 in Leipzig ) was a German philosophy lecturer and poet.

Life

The son of a preacher received his first instruction from his father. Later his uncle, Superintendent Johann Gottfried Bobertag taught him in Lobendau (Lower Silesia). In 1821 he came to the Knights' Academy in Liegnitz .

From 1828 to 1831 he studied philosophy, theology and natural sciences in Breslau and Halle . During his studies in 1828 he became a member of the old Halle fraternity . The University Hall doctorate him in 1831 to Dr. phil. After that he was a teacher in Liegnitz from 1831 to 1833. In 1833 he completed his habilitation at the University of Leipzig . There he was from 1834 to 1845 private lecturer in philosophy at the philosophy faculty and from 1845 to 1882 associate professor for technology at the philosophy faculty. Marbach translated and edited ancient tragedies and published popular books, he wrote poetry and dramas.

From 1845 to 1848 Marbach was censor for political literature and fiction and from 1848 to 1851 editor-in-chief of the Leipziger Zeitung . In 1853 he co-founded the general pension, capital and life insurance bank Teutonia , of which he was director and head for almost 30 years. In 1864 he founded the Leipziger Hypothekenbank .

Since 1844 Marbach was a member of the Leipzig Masonic Lodge Balduin zur Linde , of which he was 30 years director. He was an honorary member of around 50 boxes.

In 1836 Marbach married Rosalie Wagner , Richard Wagner's sister , who died in October 1837 five days after the birth of her daughter. In 1840 he married for the second time, from this marriage comes the writer Hans Marbach (1841–1905).

Honors

In November 1898 a street in Gohlis was named Marbachstraße.
