description

Grass lilies are perennial plants with a short rhizome and somewhat fleshy roots . The Central European species are hairless. Their stems have membranous, spiderless bracts at the base and a dark tuft of fibers. The leaves arranged in a basal rosette are grass-like, flat or rutted and gradually pointed. They have a thin-skinned sheath.

The flowers are in terminal racemose or paniculate inflorescences. The six bracts are free, radial, three- to seven-veined, white, protruding far and lasting at the time of flowering. There are six stamens , three longer and three shorter, all shorter than the perianth. There is only one stylus with a short and blunt scar .

The triple capsule fruit contains two to eight seeds per compartment.

distribution

The genus includes around 65 species in the broader version of the genus, which are mainly distributed in the tropics . With 17 species it has its main distribution in southern Africa . Some species are also found in Mexico and South America . With a narrow definition only 7 species and one hybrid belong here.
