Gregor Simon (church musician)

Gregor Simon (born November 8, 1969 in Ulm ) is a German church musician , concert organist , choir director and composer .

Live and act

Gregor Simon completed his Abitur at the Pestalozzi-Gymnasium in Biberach an der Riss. He then studied church music from 1990 to 1994 at the Saar University of Music in Saarbrücken and organ with Daniel Roth . A year later he passed the church music A-exam with organ at the Musikhochschule in Munich with Harald Feller . He attended master classes with Marie-Claire Alain , Guy Bovet , Martin Haselböck , Ewald Kooiman , Ludger Lohmann , Michael Radulescu and Lionel Rogg . In the subject of organ improvisation he also took lessons from Bernhard Haas , Wolfgang Hörlin , Willibald Bezler , Jos van der Kooy , Rudolf Meyer , Pierre Pincemaille and Wolfgang Seifen, among others . He also studied music theory at the Detmold University of Music .

From 1997 to 2001 he was a church musician at St. Fidelis in Stuttgart and dean chantor for the dean's offices in Stuttgart-Mitte and Stuttgart-Fildern. From 2002 to 2012 he was church musician in Laupheim and, since 2008, Dean's Chantor in the Ochsenhausen-Illertal deanery .

Simon has been working as a freelancer since 2013. On behalf of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart , he has since looked after the restored organ of Johann Nepomuk Holzhey in the Minster St. Peter and Paul Obermarchtal as custodian and organizes the Obermarchtal Minster Concerts there.

organist

As a concert organist, Simon played in the Memorial Church in Berlin , in the Catholic Court Church and the Kreuzkirche in Dresden, in Freiberg Cathedral , in the Großmünster in Zurich , in the Ulm Minster and at the Bad Wurzach baroque concerts.

Simon received an audience award at the Schlägl International Organ Competition in 2008. In 2009 he was one of the finalists in the Dudelange International Organ Improvisation Competition . He also plays organ improvisations for silent films , such as the 2019 European Church Music Festival in Schwäbisch Gmünd for the silent film Our hospitality ; A DVD was produced for this film on the symphonic Mühleisen organ of the St. Johannes Leonberg Church .

Choirmaster

Simon played as choirmaster with the Laudate Choir Oberschwaben (1995-2005), the Sacral Choir in St. Fidelis in Stuttgart (1997-2001), the church choir and children's choir St. Petrus and Paulus in Laupheim (2002-2012) and the oratorio choir Liederkranz Ravensburg ( 2015-2020). He has been leading the Oberschwaben concert choir since 2014 and the St. Petrus and Paulus church choir in Obermachtal since 2018.

composer

Simon received numerous composition commissions, among others from the Office for Church Music of the Diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart. He composed works for organ, choir and organ, orchestra, choir and orchestra, a cappella choir, instrumental works for small ensembles (including sonatas, trios and quartets), masses and cantatas. Numerous organ compositions by him can be found in the publications accompanying God's praise . Simon is the winner of several composition competitions.
