City dean of Stuttgart around 1890

The city dean's office in Stuttgart is one of 25 dean's offices in the Roman Catholic diocese of Rottenburg-Stuttgart . It encompasses the urban district of Stuttgart and was founded in 2006 from the four previous dean's offices of the city. In 2010, the previously existing church parishes of Stuttgart (center), Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt and Stuttgart-Filder as well as the community association Stuttgart-Nord were merged and legally united with the city dean's office. The dean's office in Stuttgart, the only city dean's office in the diocese, is thus also integrated into a joint management and administrative structure. With almost 150,000 members, around a quarter of the people in Stuttgart belong to the Catholic Church .

The city dean of Stuttgart is headed by the city dean together with the city council. The city dean is supported by three deputy city deans, the Catholic Administrative Center Stuttgart and the office of the city dean's office.

With around 1,600 employees, the Catholic Church in Stuttgart, which is organized in the deanery, is one of the largest employers in the social sector. The city dean's office includes 65 day-care centers with approx. 3,000 places, the St. Martin hospice and the Catholic social stations. Supported by the Stuttgart parishes, Caritasverband Stuttgart eV is one of the largest independent city caritas associations in Germany.

The city dean's office has a big task to solve: While the number of church members and thus the church tax revenue will decrease, socially necessary tasks for the people in Stuttgart and the associated financial obligations of the city dean's office are growing at the same time. With the project “Break up - Catholic Church in Stuttgart” decided by the City Council of Deans, the Catholic Church wants to combine a pastoral and pastoral structural reorientation of the city dean's office with budget consolidation. Participation, concentration and a positive attitude towards new target groups and developments are components of the project to strengthen the Catholic Church in Stuttgart as a force that shapes society. “Breaking up - Catholic Church in Stuttgart” has meanwhile become part of the diocesan process “Church on site - designing churches in many places”.
