biography

Gregorio Nardi comes from a family of artists and writers. He lives and works in the rooms that once belonged to his maternal grandfather, the writer Piero Bargellini, and which are now open to the public as the Casa della Memoria (House of Remembrance). Until 1987 his paternal grandparents, the pianists Rio Nardi and Gregoria Gobbi, were his teachers, a piano duo that emerged from the schools of Giuseppe Buonamici, Ernesto Consolo and Ferruccio Busoni . Gregorio Nardi was also Wilhelm Kempff's last pupil from 1980.

His career began with the prizes he won at the international competitions Artur Rubinstein (Tel Aviv 1983) and Franz Liszt (Utrecht 1986), and his concert activities extended to four continents. He has worked with singers such as Suzanne Danco , Marianne Pousseur, Elena Zaremba , Roberto Abbondanza, Mark Padmore and Leonardo Wolovsky, with musicologists (Aloma Bardi, Luigi Pestalozza, Gianfranco Vinay), with dancers and actors ( Carla Fracci , Italo Dall'Orto, Lina Sastri, Ferruccio Soleri, Vladimir Vassiliev), with violinists ( Ilya Grubert , Günter Pichler, Tamsin Waley-Cohen, Renato Zanettovich), flautists (Michele Marasco), percussionists (Jonathan Faralli).

Gregorio Nardi has played with orchestras in different countries (Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Sinfonica di Sanremo, Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest, Noordelijk Filarmonisch Orkest, Het Gelders Orkest, Frysk Orkest, Limburgs Symphonie Orkest, OSS, Orkestre de la RTL, Deutsche Kammerakademie Neuss, Brandenburg Symphoniker, Leeds Youth Symphony Orchestra, Orchester de Saintes, Orchestra Academia Szczecin, National Academic Orchestra of Bucarest). He has also dealt with the performance practice of original instruments and has been invited to France and Italy several times by Philippe Herreweghe .

His first recording - Réminiscences des Puritains by Liszt - was voted one of the best of the year by J. Methuen-Campbell ( Gramophone , 1990). In the following years, Nardi recorded two more CDs with music by Liszt - Composizioni religious and Vom Tode - as well as, as first recordings, numerous unpublished pieces by the young Robert Schumann , by Ferdinand Hummel, Arnold Schönberg and Italian composers of the 20th century.

Since 1992 he has also worked as a music critic, initially for the record magazine CD Classica . Reviews and articles on the history of pianistic interpretation followed, especially in the monthly magazine Musica , and on the history of Jewish composers ( The Orel Foundation ). He has given master classes and university lectures (in Italy and Israel), lectures on Busoni and his students ( École Normale de Musique de Paris , 1994), and on Schumann and Romanticism ( Scuola Normale Superiore , Pisa 2000 and 2001), and lecture concerts on Alberto Savinio (International Congress Düsseldorf 2001, Lenbachhaus Munich 2002, Kunstmuseum Winterthur 2008), lectures on Arnold Böcklin and music (International Symposium, Basel 2001), Charles Ives ( Syracuse University Florence 2004, École Normale Paris 2005) and the Brahms Interpretation ( Université Paris8 2004).

From 1994, for more than ten years, Gregorio Nardi was artistic director of the Associazione Musicale di Santa Cecilia a Crevole (Siena). Since its inception, he has worked with ICAMus ( The International Center for American Music ) in a series of projects to promote classical American music. He is co-founder and artistic director of FLAMEnsemble, a group of 22 soloists for contemporary music, as well as the Florence Chamber Music Festival , which has held monographic concerts with music by Elliott Carter , Klaus Huber, George Crumb, Salvatore Sciarrino , Henri in the previous three episodes Pousseur , György Kurtág and György Ligeti , John Cage ; has organized, with the participation of performers such as Klaus Huber e Younghi Pagh-Paan, Ursula and Heinz Holliger , Marianne Pousseur and Salvatore Sciarrino.

repertoire

The search for new, unpublished and unknown pieces has a high priority in Gregorio Nardi's work. His panoramic programs with pieces by Jewish composers from two centuries, for example, aroused great interest, as did his performances of some rare masterpieces from the early Romantic period ( Charles Valentin Alkan , Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga , Ignaz Moscheles , George Frederick Pinto , Jan Václav Voříšek , Carl Maria von Weber ...). He premiered numerous works: the first version of the Concord sonata by Charles Ives, 2 canons and the piano piece Frei after Schumann by Johannes Brahms , 12 pieces by Hans Rott , three etudes and three preludes and fugue by Busoni, the 17th Fragments by Schönberg, unpublished pieces by Alberto Savinio, 2 intermezzi from Ulisse by Luigi Dallapiccola in the transcription by Franco Donatoni . In 2003 Nardi performed all 18 songs from George Gershwin's song book for the first time , in the vocal version and in the solo version, both reconstructed with the help of documents and Gershwin's recordings. Several contemporary authors have written for Nardi, including Luciano Berio , Henri Pousseur , Roman Vlad , Gwyn Pritchard , Andrea Cavallari.

Fundamental are his research into unpublished piano works by Robert Schumann, which mainly relate to his early creative period. Based on the original manuscripts, Nardi premiered numerous pieces by Schumann: Fantaisies et Finale , Variations Pathétiques , Variations on a theme by Ignaz Freiherr von Fricken , 6 unpublished variations on a theme by Beethoven , Variation on the Preziosamarsch (Weber), Variations on the bell theme (Paganini), Sehnsuchtswalzervariationen (Schubert), 6 fugues, 5 canons, 6 waltzes, 5 papillots , 2 burles, Je ne suis q'un songe , Scènes Mignonnes , Capriccio , Ecossaise , Notturnino , Ballo , Burla , Fantaisie sovra un tema di quattro note ; and finally the first unpublished versions of Quasi Variazioni , Sonata in G minor, Papillons , Abegg Variations , Phantasiestücke Op. 111.
