Grochwitz is a district of the Thuringian municipality of Harth-Pöllnitz ( Greiz district ).
location
The village is located southwest of the city of Weida. The Auma flows through the local area. The bank area of the Aumatalsperre then begins southeast of the district .
history
The place originated in the 7th century as a Sorbian clan settlement Grochovici . It was first mentioned in a document in 1356.
Grochwitz was a mill location. In 1542 three mills in the village were mentioned in a tax list:
- The upper mill was first mentioned in 1416 at Arnshaugk in a feudal letter. 1955 ran the water wheel for the last time.
- The middle mill was first mentioned in a loan letter in 1416. Today the property is in disrepair.
- The Heinoldsmühle was first mentioned in 1513. 1907–1908 the water wheels were dismantled and the mill was operated with a turbine. The construction of the Auma dam led to the cessation of operations in 1935. Today a millstone on the way reminds of the mill.
Culture and sights
The Protestant branch church is a small, essentially Romanesque church with a recessed, square choir tower and apse. It was redesigned in 1794 and refurbished in 1875. There is a north and a west gallery in the ship. The choir is vaulted with groin vaults, the apse is partially set back by reinforcing walls. A 1 m high altar crucifix is of high quality craftsmanship.
