history

In 893, property in Hertene was already shown at the Prüm Abbey . The Fronhof with the St. Margeretha Chapel already existed when Gerhard von Jülich acquired the estate in the 14th century . It has been proven that there was an agricultural property there as early as the 11th century.

On February 27, 1945, the time of National Socialism and the Second World War ended in Grottenherten . US troops advancing from the Rur to the Rhine (see Operation Grenade ) took grottoes under constant fire on the night of February 25-26, 1945. In the early morning of February 27, about a third of the place fell. Pütz and Königshoven were also captured after heavy artillery fire and chain bombs were dropped . The reason for the attacks was that in February 1945 the 11th Panzer Division of the Wehrmacht had large parts of their equipment in position near Grottenherten.
