Usnea hirta , seldom referred to as pit lichen , is a shrub lichen that grows on tree bark.

description

The shrubby-bushy thallus of the pit lichen is only fused to the base in one place, it is greyish to yellowish green and reaches up to about 5 cm in length and width. The branches are up to 0.6 mm thick (rarely more), sometimes angular or somewhat pitted and have a tough, white central strand on the inside. It is characterized by a light base and numerous long and thin isidia protruding like a thorn . Fruit bodies ( apothecia ) are very rare.

Location and distribution

Pit lichen grows on tree bark, mainly on conifers or deciduous trees with acidic bark. It is the most drought-tolerant species of its genus and at the same time one of the most common Usnea species in Central Europe. Nevertheless, like almost all shrub lichen, it is particularly sensitive to air pollutants and has therefore almost disappeared from many areas of Germany or can only be found in stunted growth. As a result of flue gas desulphurisation , however, it can increasingly migrate back to industrialized conurbations.

Others

The bryological-lichenological working group for Central Europe named the pit lichen as lichen of the year 2005.
