The Grundelbach is a left tributary of the Weschnitz in the Odenwald that is almost eleven kilometers long - counted with its slightly longer right source branch, Kundenbach .

Surname

The Grundelbach got its name from the small fish called gobies . The stream gave its name to the short-lived community of Grundelbachtal , which was formed in the run-up to the regional reform in Hesse in 1971 from the merger of the formerly independent communities Unter-Flockenbach and Gorxheim . In 1972 the municipality of Grundelbachtal merged with Trösel in the municipality of Gorxheimertal .

geography

course

The Grundelbach rises in the south of the Vorderen Odenwald in the municipality of Heiligkreuzsteinach, southeast of the Daumberg and on the edge of the forest north of the village of Hilsenhain ( 410  m above sea level ). From there it first flows to the northwest and after about a hundred meters reaches the border with Hesse and its municipality of Gorxheimertal . With a steep gradient, it cuts into a forest valley and after around one and a half kilometers of the valley path in Trösel ( 261  m above sea level ) from the right it reaches its first notable tributary, the Kundenbach . From the Waldskopf ( 538  m ) to the confluence, it has a path of around two kilometers behind it and a partial catchment area that is about twice as large as the left source branch of the Grundelbach and is viewed by some as the actual upper reaches of the Grundelbach. At Trösel the Grundelbach turns to the west and then receives a number of short side streams from the north. From the south there are also two somewhat longer tributaries, the Michelbach and the Gängelbach , both of which have their headwaters on the northern slope of the Eichelberg ( 524.9  m ). After crossing the districts of Unter-Flockenbach and Gorxheim, the Grundelbach leaves the Hessian area again. He reaches the Müllheimer Tal , a deeply cut, narrow forest valley in which the smallest of the five parts of the Weinheim core city is located. In front of the Weinheim Castle , the stream turns north and flows, channeled under the Grundelbachstrasse , around 1000 meters further north into the Weschnitz .

Catchment area

The Grundelbach drains 27.7 km² of the Vorderen Odenwald approximately westwards to the Weschnitz. Its catchment area borders in the north on that of the nearby Kallstädter Bach , which flows slightly above and almost parallel to it to the Weschnitz . The ridge in front of this neighboring stream that extends from the Wachenburg ( 315  m above sea level ) over the mouth to the Waldskopf ( 538  m above sea level ) is therefore quite narrow and the tributaries to it from this side are rather short. The eastern border of the catchment area from Waldskopf and Hohberg ( 531  m above sea level ) in the northeast to the southeast corner near Wildeleutstein ( 522  m above sea level ) separates the drainage area of the upper Steinach , which flows south to the Odenwaldneckar . Then the watershed runs over the Wildeleutstein, the Eichelberg ( 525  m above sea level ) and the Ursenbacher Höhe saddle west to the Steinberg ( 429  m above sea level ) near Oberflockenbach and separates from the catchment area of the Kanzelbach , which is also outside the Odenwald the Neckar flows into. From this Steinberg back to the mouth, the watershed then runs northwest over Goldkopf ( 324  m above sea level ) and Geiersberg ( 340  m above sea level ) to the Weinheim city center to the mouth; on the other side, a clump of streams runs westward from the Odenwald to the Landgraben, which the Weschnitz flows far down after a long parallel run.

A large part of the catchment area is forested, but from Trösel to a seldom exposed, thin settlement band stretches along the stream. There is also a lot of settlement on the large left tributaries, which also extends more to the slopes here.
