The IAI 1125 Astra is a twin-engine business jet produced by the Israeli manufacturer Israel Aerospace Industries . It is the successor to the Rockwell Jet Commander , which has been built under license by IAI since 1968, and the IAI 1124 Westwind . Since 2002 it has been called the Gulfstream G100 . The Astra was further developed into the Galaxy (today Gulfstream G200 ) in the 1990s .

history

In the early 1980s, Israel Aircraft Industries began revising IAI 1124 West Wind . The prototype (4X-WIN, serial number 4001) of the Astra completed its maiden flight on March 19, 1984, the first series machine in March 1985. The FAA approval took place in August 1985. 1986 the first copies were delivered.

The original version 1125 Astra was replaced in 1989 by the Astra SP and 37 units were built.

The third variant was initially called the Astra Galaxy . It was later named Astra SPX and flew for the first time in August 1994. This model was renamed Gulfstream G100 in September 2002 after Gulfstream took over rights holder Galaxy Aerospace in May 2001. The G100 was still built by IAI in Israel , but the interior was built in the USA .

A revised version has been available since 2005, which is offered under the name G150 . The development of this version was announced in September 2002. It has an enlarged fuselage and can now accommodate eight passengers instead of six. TFE731 engines serve as the drive, with which a cruising speed of Mach 0.75 and a range of 5000 km can be achieved. The military variant C-38 Courier is planned for the US Air Force , with which the outdated C-21 Learjet is to be replaced.

Gulfstream announced on September 28, 2016 that it would discontinue production of the model; the last delivery of a G150 is planned for mid-2017.

Others

Since 2002, the research project “DOTSTAR” in Taiwan has been using such an aircraft for flights around typhoons. So-called dropsondes are thrown off, which provide real-time data from the interior of tropical cyclones during the descent, which satellites cannot obtain in this way. The DOTSTAR aircraft is currently flying the only Typhoon missions in the Pacific. In 1987 the US Navy gave up its flights from Guam.

The Gulfstream G100 is one of three aircraft used in the crime series "Criminal Minds".
