Gurf Morlix

Gurf Morlix (* 1951 in Buffalo , New York , actually William Davis Towle) is an American multi-instrumentalist , singer , songwriter and producer who has lived in Austin , Texas for many years . He worked with many well-known artists from the Americana and Alternative Country areas , but also published a number of his own works.

Life

Gurf Morlix moved from New York to Texas in 1975, where he first played with Blaze Foley in both Austin and Houston . In 1981 he moved on to Los Angeles , where he met the young Lucinda Williams , who had also come from Texas. He accompanied her from 1985 to 1996 and produced two of her rare records: Lucinda Williams and the follow-up Sweet Old World . Morlix was also initially involved as a producer for Williams' international breakthrough Car Wheels on a Gravel Road ; the release of the album dragged on - including several new recordings - and Morlix left the difficult musician in frustration. In 1990 Morlix accompanied Warren Zevon on a tour. The following year he moved back to Austin.

Gurf Morlix worked with many musicians. His major productions include CDs by Robert Earl Keen , Mary Gauthier , Ray Wylie Hubbard and Slaid Cleaves . He also appears again and again as a musician on the CDs; he plays u. a. Guitar , bass , mandolin , mandocello , dobro , pedal steel , Weissenborn , banjo , harmonica and drums . Morlix was inducted into the Austin Music Awards Hall of Fame in 2004 and the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame in 2005. He was also Instrumentalist of the Year for the Americana Music Association in 2009 .
