Count Gustaf David Hamilton Swedish Gustaf David formerly Hamilton af Hageby, greve Hamilton (born January 29, 1699 in Västra Tunhem , † December 29, 1788 in Barsebäck ) was a Swedish field marshal .

Life

Origin and family

Gustaf David was a member of a Swedish lineage of the originally Scottish House of Hamilton . His parents were the Swedish Major General Hugo Hamilton (1655-1724) and Anna Margareta Henriksdotter (1668-1722). The Swedish Field Marshal Hugo Johan Hamilton (1668–1748) was his cousin.

Hamilton, until then Baron Hamilton af Hageby , was raised to the Swedish count status in 1751 and introduced to the count class of knighthood (No. 86) in 1752 . He married Jakobina Henrietta Hildebrand (1717–1769) in 1740. The marriage resulted in 11 children, including the Swedish Lieutenant General Hugo Vilhelm Hamilton (1741–1800).

Career

Hamilton began his career in 1717 as a sergeant and in 1718 as a cornet . In 1720 he was in French service as captain with the regiment "Royal Suédois" . He joined in 1727 as captain of cavalry regiment Östgöta was 1735 commander in the regiment "Royal Suédois", took part in the Polish Succession War part and joined in 1737 still as a captain for Garrison Regiment in Gothenburg . He was promoted to lieutenant colonel in French service in 1741 and acted in the Second Silesian War in Bohemia in 1745 , before receiving his own regiment as a colonel in Sweden in the same year . He rose to major general of the infantry in 1747 and lieutenant general in 1755. As early as 1748 he became a Knight of the Order of the Sword . 1758 he was in the Seven Years' War as a general-in-chief in Pomerania , but its the same year farewell get. Hamilton received the honorary title of Field Marshal in 1765 and the Order of Seraphine in 1769 , and in 1778 the honorary title of Imperial Lord (En av rikets herrar).

Hamiliton was Count zu Barsebäck with Hofterup and Lundåkra , and heir to Henkeltorp and Habo . He had Barsebäck Castle restored in 1743 and donated the connected property to a Fideikommiss in 1767 . He was buried on March 31, 1789 in the church in Barsebäck.
