Gustav Adolf Barthel
Gustav Adolf Barthel (born March 11, 1819 in Braunschweig ; † July 18, 1898 there ) was a German portrait painter. From 1852 he was the court painter of Brunswick and from 1857 to 1880 inspector of the ducal picture gallery in Brunswick.
Life
Barthel received his first training from his father, the painter, draftsman and engraver Friedrich Barthel († 1846). His older brother was the literary historian Karl Barthel . At the age of 15 he gained attention and encouragement from the ruling Duke Wilhelm through a portrait of the actor Eduard Schütz . From 1836 Barthel attended the Collegium Carolinum in his hometown. In 1838 a ducal scholarship enabled him to study at the Munich Academy , where Joseph Karl Stieler and Wilhelm von Kaulbach were among his teachers. He continued his studies with Carl Friedrich Lessing at the Düsseldorf Art Academy . From 1842 Barthel worked as a portrait painter in Braunschweig. Duke Wilhelm appointed him court painter in 1852 and inspector of the ducal picture gallery in 1857. In 1864 he was made a Knight of the Guelph Order .
His son was the stage actor Alexander Barthel .

In addition to some genre and landscape paintings, Barthel mainly created portraits, including images of the Brunswick dukes Ferdinand, Friedrich Wilhelm , Karl Wilhelm Ferdinand and Wilhelm. He portrayed members of the Braunschweig court theater, including Eduard Schütz , Wilhelm Schwerin, Marie Heese , Caroline Fischer-Eighth , Johanna Großer and Amalie Dub. He also created portraits of pastors from the Katharinenkirche . His works are shown in the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum and the Städtisches Museum Braunschweig . A large-format portrait of the Duke Wilhelm is in since 2011 the White Hall of the Castle Museum issued.
