Life

Gustav Bechler was a son of the wood sculptor Julius Bechler and the Rhinelander Johanna Conrad. He studied at the Munich Art Academy , from 1889 under Heinrich Knirr , from 1891 under Karl Raupp and from 1894 under Paul Hoecker . He was friends with the artist Leo Putz and like him a co-founder of the artists' association “ Scholle ” and employee of the art and literary magazine Jugend . Since 1899 he has regularly exhibited his works in the Glaspalast as part of the “Scholle” artists' association . From 1898 to 1905 he worked in Steinberg in Tyrol and alternated between there and Munich. Then he moved to Maurach near Jenbach . There he also worked as a photographer. He made trips to Berlin, Leipzig and Dresden. In 1911 he traveled to Rome. In 1927 the Munich Academy awarded him the title of professor. He belonged to the Innsbruck Secession and showed works at their exhibitions in the 1930s.

Bechler was mainly a landscape painter , preferring alpine motifs, especially in the area around the Achensee , which earned him the name "painter of the Achensee". Its atmospheric Tyrolean mountain landscapes can be assigned to impressionism . His specialty was a broad brush application. In addition, Bechler made colored woodcuts , in whose simplified forms he emphasized the surface effect. His woodblock prints are often related to his paintings. They have been printed and reviewed in numerous art magazines. Bechler's best-known woodcuts include March Sun (1902), Scheidender Winter (1909), which won a gold medal at an exhibition in the Munich Glass Palace, and Winterliche Stille (1911), which was awarded a bronze medal in Turin. His older work includes pictures of the Rhine , which he created from 1950.

Gustav Bechler was married to Karoline Bechler, a daughter of Salome and Johannes Frankhauser who was born in Steinberg near Achenkirch . They had three children: Julius, Hans and Johanna.
