Gustav Haloun

Gustav Haloun (born January 12, 1898 in Pirnitz , Margraviate Moravia , Austria-Hungary , † December 24, 1951 in Cambridge ) was a sinologist .

Life

The son of a forestry councilor attended the state high school in Iglau from 1908 to 1916 . From May 1916 he served in the Joint Army . After the end of the war he studied Sinology, Japanese Studies , Ethnology , Prehistory , Ancient History , History of the Middle East and Religious Studies at the Universities of Vienna and Leipzig . In Vienna he learned Chinese with Arthur von Rosthorn , in Leipzig his most important teacher was the sinologist August Conrady . Haloun received his doctorate on August 2, 1923 in Leipzig. He completed his habilitation in 1926 at the German University in Prague , where he taught as a private lecturer until 1927 . From 1928 to 1931 he had a teaching position for Sinology at the University of Halle . From November 1931 he was head of the Sinological Department of the University of Göttingen , where he was appointed extraordinary professor in March 1934. He represented the Sinology chairs in Bonn (SS 31 and SS 36) and Berlin (SS 36). Since he fought against the Nazi regime , he went to Cambridge University in November 1938 , where he took over the chair of Chinese language and history as the successor to Arthur Christopher Moule .
