Karl Gustav Helbig (also Carl Gustav Helbig ; pseudonym : CG Freimund ; * July 20, 1808 in Dresden ; † March 19, 1875 there ) was a German historian and educator .

Life

Helbig was the son of a Dresden official. From 1820 to 1826 he attended the Kreuzschule in his hometown and then went to the University of Leipzig , where he studied philology and theology . 1829/1830 was educator in the house of the general and police chief of Warsaw Lewitzkoy. In 1831 he finally passed the theology exam in Dresden.

Helbig was in 1833 as collaborator to Dresdner Kreuzschule called . In 1835 he was appointed extraordinary senior teacher. In 1862 he was promoted to vice principal of the school and he was awarded the title of professor . In 1868 he settled in the retirement move and finally died in 1875 from a chronic stomach ailment.

In addition to his teaching and writing activities, Helbig was one of the central heads of the literary associations of his time. Among other things, he was managing director of the Monday Society and chairman of the German Association . He also worked on the General German Biography . On June 6, 1864, he was from the University of Breslau the honorary doctorate ( Dr. hc phil. ) Awarded.

Wolfgang Helbig was his son.
