Gustav Lohmann (born January 31, 1876 in Witten , Westphalia , Prussia , † May 23, 1967 in Stolberg , North Rhine-Westphalia ) was a German Protestant pastor and hymn poet .

Life

Gustav Lohmann was born on the southern edge of the Ruhr area, he finished his school career with the Abitur in 1897 in Burgsteinfurt . He studied theology at the universities of Bonn , Berlin and Strasbourg .

From 1904 to 1909 Lohmann was assistant preacher in various parishes of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland : Krefeld , Kalk , Kreuznach , Sobernheim , Rosbach , Düsseldorf , Wupperfeld and Lüttringhausen .

In Lüttringhausen he then took over his first pastor's post in 1909, which he held until 1919, even when he was drafted into military service during the First World War .

From 1919 to 1944 Lohmann was pastor in Stolberg in what was then the Aachen district . His membership in the NSDAP brought about church political entanglements. When the civilian population of Stolberg was evacuated at the end of the Second World War , the church administration commissioned Lohmann to provide pastoral care to the evacuees in Altenkirchen im Westerwald and in Herford . At the beginning of 1946 Lohmann retired, which he spent in Stolberg.

Hymn

Lohmann composed the text of verses 1, 2, 4 and 5 of the hymn Help, Lord of my Life in 1962. Three years later it was published as a hymn and was very well received. Supplemented by a stanza by Markus Jenny , the song was included in the Evangelical Hymnbook (No. 419), where it was printed with the canon See, I'm with you all days (by Wolfgang Fischer ) , which was to be sung at the same time . The song was previously included in the Catholic hymn book Praise God (No. 622). Today it is also part of the Mennonite hymn book (No. 102). The melody was composed by Hans Puls in 1962.
