Guy Joosten (born March 4, 1963 in Genk ) is a Belgian theater and opera director who works regularly in Germany .

life and work

In 1984 Guy Joosten and Luk Perceval founded the Blauwe Maandag Compagnie , based in Antwerp. In this alternative theater collective he acted as artistic director and director. He was quickly invited to direct at other stages, at NTGent , at the Koninklijke Vlaamse Schouwburg in Brussels and at the Brussels Kamertoneel. Invitations to Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Groningen followed.

1991, at the age of 28, he made his debut at the Vienna Burgtheater with vigil by Lars Norén , a piece with which he had already won awards in the Netherlands. In 1991 he staged opera for the first time at the Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp. Since then he has worked at a number of opera houses in Amsterdam, Barcelona, ​​Bern, Bologna, Brussels, Duisburg, Düsseldorf, Essen, Genève, Gothenburg, Hamburg, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Leipzig, Lisbon, London, Liège, Madrid, Maribor, Marseille , Monte Carlo, Montpellier, Oviedo, Rouen, Saint-Étienne, St. Gallen, Sofia, Vienna and Zurich. In 2005 he directed for the first time at the Metropolitan Opera in New York: The All-Stars production of Roméo et Juliette by Charles Gounod with Rolando Villazón and Anna Netrebko in the title roles and with Plácido Domingo at the podium was recorded for television two years later. In 2015, his Elektra production at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna was awarded the Premio Abbiati for Best Director. In 2018 his work was shown for the first time in Asia, at the Korea National Opera in Seoul and at the Tokyo Nikikai Opera Theater .

Joosten worked and works with well-known theater people, for example with the set designers Johannes Leiacker , Katrin Nottrodt and Martin Zehetgruber , the choreographer Stijn Celis or the lighting designer Manfred Voss . Johannes Erath and Sandy Tomsits , who subsequently became opera directors herself, were among his assistant directors. He also teaches at the University of Hamburg as well as in Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Saarbrücken, Maastricht and Barcelona. He gave opera courses at the Royal Conservatory of Antwerp . In 2013 he founded the International Opera Academy in Ghent, which he has directed ever since. He also gives master classes, for example in Antwerp, Sofia and Tel Aviv.
