history

The architecture office, founded in Basel in 2003 by Tilo Herlach, Simon Hartmann and Simon Frommenwiler , has implemented construction projects in Switzerland, China , Germany , France , Mexico and the USA . The construction tasks range from new buildings, such as the “Labels 2” fashion center in Berlin , to interior fittings and planning tasks such as the master plans for the public spaces of Praille-Acacias-Vernets in Geneva and La Défense in Paris , as well as the development plan for the Unterfeld in Zug, to objects in public spaces such as the Baby Dragon in China or the “Espinazo del Diablo” viewing platform on the “Ruta del Peregrino” in the Mexican state of Jalisco . HHF Architects consciously seek collaboration with artists and other architects. In this context, projects such as “Ruta del Peregrino” and the fruitful collaboration with the Chinese conceptual artist Ai Weiwei , which has been ongoing since 2005, emerged .

Shortly after the office was founded, the first works were shown in national and international architecture exhibitions. In 2005, HHF were invited to contribute to the "Jinhua Architecture and Arts Park" for the "Hong Kong & Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism \ Architecture". In 2007 the invitation follows as an official contribution from Switzerland to the 7th Int. São Paulo Architecture Biennale to participate. In 2011 the works created in collaboration with Ai Weiwei will be shown as part of the exhibition “Ai Weiwei - Art / Architecture” at the Kunsthaus Bregenz . The German Architecture Museum (DAM) in Frankfurt am Main is showing “Labels 2” in 2012 as part of the exhibition “The 23 best buildings”. HHF were invited to the 13th, 14th and 16th Venice Architecture Biennale and the 2017 Chicago Architecture Biennial. Her works are part of the permanent collections of the Center Georges Pompidou in Paris, the Architecture Museum of the Technical University of Munich in the Pinakothek der Moderne in Munich and the Heinz Architectural Center in the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.

In addition to numerous other national and international awards, HHF received the "Design Vanguard 2010". In 2012 HHF received the important "Wallpaper Design Award" for which they were nominated in 2010. In 2009 and 2013, HHF received an “American Architecture Award”. In 2013 HHF won the German “House of the Year” award, and in 2014 they received the “Swiss Architecture Award”.

In addition to building, architecture studies are an important concern of the partners. They were visiting professors at the University of Innsbruck , the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT School of Architecture and Planning in Cambridge and were visiting lecturers at the UIA in Mexico City as well as guest critics at numerous universities worldwide. Simon Frommenwiler taught as a visiting professor at the École nationale supérieure d'architecture de Strasbourg from 2011 to 2018 .
