Hakkı Başar

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hakkı Başar (born September 24, 1969 in Sakarya ) is a former Turkish wrestler .

Career

Başar grew up in Istanbul and did not start wrestling until the age of 17 in 1986. He joined the Istanbul wrestling club "Ithisas Spor". At that time he was trained by Ata Karatas. Hakkı wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style. Later he moved to the club "Böyökzehir Belediye" Istanbul, where he was looked after by the coach Ibrahim Yildirim. At the age of 18 he began his international career with a victory at the Balkan Games in Romania in 1988 . Back then he was wrestling in the middleweight division. In 1989 he finished 7th at the Junior World Championships in Budapest . He then competed in several international championships in 1990 and 1991, but was not yet able to place in the front field. The Turkish Wrestling Association remained loyal to him and also nominated Hakkı for the 1992 Olympic Games because it was recognized that there was a lot of potential in him.

In fact, he made his breakthrough at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona . He delivered excellent fights in the light heavyweight division, defeated the Russian Gogi Koguaschwili and was only defeated by the German Maik Bullmann in the fight for the gold medal . The silver medal was the reward for his good fights.

He also defeated Koguashvili at the European Championships in Istanbul in 1993, but this time failed to the Swedish surprise man Jörgen Olsson , but still won the bronze medal in the light heavyweight division.

In 1994 he suffered a setback in terms of performance when he only finished 13th at the European Championships in Athens and only 15th at the World Championships in Tampere . At the European Championships in Besançon in 1995 , he started in the heavyweight division, but could not prevail there and only came in seventh.

At the 1995 World Cup , he achieved his first major victory. He became world light heavyweight champion. His main rival Gogi Koguaschwili was eliminated before the final, in which Hakkı Petru Sudureac from Romania safely beat.

In 1996 Hakkı was less successful again. After a 12th place at the European Championships, he still reached 5th place at the Olympic Games in Atlanta in the light heavyweight division.

The year 1997 brought a new weight classification by the international wrestling association FILA . Light heavyweight and heavyweight, previously up to 90 kg and 100 kg body weight, were merged into a new weight class light heavy weight, which went up to 97 kg body weight. The former light heavyweights and the former heavyweights met in this weight class. The competition in this new weight class was therefore very fierce. Nevertheless, Hakkı achieved a great success in the spring of 1997 when he became European champion in Kouvola / Finland , where some of the previous stars of the old weight classes were missing. He defeated Anatoly Fedorenko from Belarus in the final . In autumn it was only enough for 10th place at the World Championships in Breslau , where all cracks from the former weight classes competed for the first time .

After all, he won another bronze medal at the 1998 European Championships in Minsk . In the following years he achieved a few good placements at international championships, but he did not win any more medals. The end of his career was disappointing for him, namely his third participation in the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 . He only finished 16th there.

After the end of his active career, Başar completed his training as a trainer and is now a trainer for the Greco-Roman style in the Turkish Wrestling Association. He also runs a sports and fitness facility.

The results of the international championships and some other tournaments that Başar participated in can be found in the next section.
