Hanelle M. Culpepper

Hanelle M. Culpepper (born September 22, 1970 in Birmingham (Alabama) ) is an American filmmaker who is best known for her work as a television director of episodes from 90210 , Parenthood , Criminal Minds , Revenge , Grimm and other series. She also directed the feature films Within (2009), Deadly Sibling Rivalry (2011), Murder on the 13th Floor (2012) and Hunt for the Labyrinth Killer (2013).

Culpepper is from Alabama and is a graduate of Indian Springs School . She attended Lake Forest College where she majored in Economics and French, graduating with Summa Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa . She received her MA from the USC Annenberg School for Communication

After initially serving as assistant to Oscar-winning screenwriter and director Callie Khouri , Culpepper was selected for the American Film Institute's prestigious directing workshop for women . Her short film A Single Rose has won numerous awards and has been shown at film festivals around the world, including the 2004 International Cinematographers Guild Showcase at the Cannes Film Festival. This was followed by the other short film Six and the City and finally Culpepper's first independent feature film, the thriller Within . It won the Outstanding Feature Film award at the Big Bear Horror Film Festival and had its television premiere on Lifetime . In the following years, Hanelle shot several thrillers, including Murder on the 13th Floor with the young Tessa Thompson . Culpepper's television career began when he took part in a directing initiative from media company NBC Universal that resulted in directing the series Parenthood .

Culpepper became the first female director to introduce a new Star Trek series in the history of this franchise , directing the first two episodes of Star Trek: Picard .

Awards

Culpepper was nominated for the NAACP Award for Outstanding Directing in a Drama Series for the Criminal Minds episode "The Edge of Winter". Shemar Moore won the Best Actor Award for that episode.
