Hanneles Himmelfahrt is a film drama by the director Thea von Harbou , who also wrote the screenplay , from 1934. The literary film adaptation is based on the literary model of the same name by the playwright and writer Gerhart Hauptmann . In the lead role embodies Inge estate the orphan Hannele.

Hannele grew up without her birth parents with her stepfather, the bricklayer Mattern, in a small mountain village. When she is badly mistreated by him, she escapes from the house. The devout Hannele can the shame that was done to her, not stand and decides to suicide to commit. At the last moment she is rescued by the forest worker Seidel, who places her in the care of the caring teacher Gottwald. However, Hannele continues to cause emotional torment in her life: She often wakes up at night, shaken by febrile convulsions. Finally she comes to a poor house, where she still has no inner peace, because she continues to have dreams in which she meets her dear, unfortunately already deceased, wife mother. In her dreams she lives a childlike happy existence, only to wake up from it again and again, to then look reality in the eye every time anew.
Production notes
The shooting took a long time, from the beginning of 1933 to the beginning of January 1934. The film premiered on April 14, 1934 in Berlin . It was shown in Finnish cinemas on December 26, 1938. Willy Reiber was in charge of film production, Walter Tost was in charge of the production line. The buildings were designed by Walter Reimann and Ludwig Reiber . This was the last German film for the Jew Gabriel Levy , after which he had to leave Germany.
The Berlin Chamber Choir sang under the direction of Walter Favre .
