Hans Dorr

Hans Dorr (born April 7, 1912 in Sontheim ; † March 21, 1945 near Judenburg ( Styria )) was a German officer in the Schutzstaffel and Waffen SS in World War II . At the end of the war he was SS-Obersturmbannführer . Dorr was one of twenty members of the Waffen-SS who were awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords.

Life

Dorr was the son of a farmer . After attending primary school , he completed a trade school for three years, which he completed as a butcher's journeyman.

In April 1933 he joined SS Sturm 29 of the SS disposal force in Ottobrunn . There he was assigned to the 3rd storm of the 1st storm man . Dorr completed his basic infantry training from January to mid-May 1934 with the 6th State Police Hundred in Munich . Then he was deployed from July to September 1934 in the 2nd storm of SS Standard 1 "Germany" . On October 1, 1934, Dorr took a junior leader candidate course in the III. Sturmbann of the SS standard 2 "Germania" , where he was promoted to SS-Sturmmann at the same time . After completing the course at the end of December 1934, Dorr came to the III. Sturmbann of the SS-Standarte 2 "Germania", where it was used in an infantry gun company. On June 1, 1935, he was promoted to SS Rottenführer here . From November 1935 to September 1937 Dorr served in the III. Sturmbann of the "SS-Germania" as group and deputy platoon leader . During this time he was promoted to SS-Unterscharführer on November 15, 1935 and to SS-Scharführer on April 20, 1937 . From October 1937 to August 1, 1938, Dorr completed a Junker course at the SS Junker School Bad Tölz , where he was promoted to SS Standard Junker on April 1, 1938 . Following the Junker School, Dorr attended a train driver course in Dachau until mid-September 1938 . From mid-October 1938 he was employed as a platoon leader in the 10th company of III./SS-VT “Germania” in Radolfzell . With this Dorr took part in the occupation of the Sudetenland and the so-called smashing of the rest of the Czech Republic.

Second World War

In September 1939, Dorr also took part in the attack on Poland in the 10th company of the SS standard "Germania" . The standard was subordinate to the 14th Army and used in Upper Silesia and southern Poland. In the course of the campaign, Dorr was wounded on September 17, 1939. On November 14, 1939, Dorr was awarded the Iron Cross 2nd class. After his recovery, Dorr was used from November 5, 1939 to mid-February 1940 as a company commander of the 10th Company. In this function he was promoted to SS-Obersturmführer on January 30, 1940 . From February 15, 1940 until he was wounded again on May 25, 1940 in the western campaign , Dorr served as an orderly officer in the III. Battalion of the SS standard "Germania" ( SS disposal division ). On August 20, 1940, the Iron Cross First Class was awarded. On September 1, 1940, Dorr was appointed leader of the motorcycle reconnaissance platoon of the SS regiment “Germania” , a position he only held until mid-September 1940.

On September 15, 1940, he was appointed leader of the 1st company in the motorized SS regiment "Germania". From November 1940, Dorr , who was promoted to SS-Hauptsturmführer , and his regiment belonged to the newly established SS division "Wiking" and was also employed as an orderly and court officer. Within the SS “Wiking” division, Dorr was a company commander in the attack on the Soviet Union and on December 19, 1941 was awarded the German Cross in Gold. Dorr led the 1st company of the “Germania” regiment until April 20, 1942. On the same day he received the gold wound badge and temporarily transferred to the SS infantry replacement battalion “Germania” .

On June 1, 1942, he was appointed Chief of the 4th Company of the SS Infantry Regiment "Germania" , which he led until February 20, 1943 with an interruption. On September 27, 1942, Dorr was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross . From February 20, 1943, Dorr was transferred to the SS Panzer Grenadier Replacement Battalion "Germania". On April 1, 1943 he was appointed battalion commander of the 1st battalion of the said SS infantry regiment "Germania" and on November 9, 1943 Dorr was appointed SS-Sturmbannführer .

On November 13, 1943, Dorr was the 327th soldier to be awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knight's Cross. He received the award for recapturing a place in the Sselishche - Kaniv area ( III. Panzer Corps ) and for successfully relieving parts of his encircled battalion. On May 17, 1944, Dorr was appointed commander of the 9th SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment "Germania", which he commanded until his death. In this capacity, Dorr was awarded the Oak Leaves Swords on July 9, 1944 as the 77th bearer. He received it for “ weapons deeds ” from January 31 to February 5, 1944 at Orlowez , February 9 to 11, 1944 at Arbusino , February 12 to 14, 1944 at Schanderowka , and February 15 to 15, 1944 at Nowa Buda as well for the breakthrough from the Cherkassy pocket on February 17, 1944. Also for the subsequent attacks on Kovel and the height of 189.5. On August 18, 1944, he was promoted to SS-Obersturmbannführer .

On January 21, 1945, the 9th SS Panzer Grenadier Regiment, as part of the 5th SS Panzer Division "Wiking", was involved in the planned relief of Budapest . After the capture of Sárosd, southwest of Budapest, the regimental command post was hit by Soviet anti-tank fire during a briefing . Several officers present were killed and Dorr was wounded for the 16th time. On March 21, 1945 Dorr died as a result of this wound in a hospital near Judenburg . His grave is in the Judenburg cemetery .
