Hans Eidig (born January 29, 1804 in Klein-Klecken , † 1836 or 1837 in New York ) was a game shooter and folk hero in the Lüneburg Heath .

Live and act

Eidig was born the son of the forester Benedix Eidig and his wife Magdalena Margaretha (née Niemeyer) on January 29, 1804 in Klein-Klecken and baptized Johann Christoph on January 31, 1804 in the church in Hittfeld . Johann became the nickname Hans.

At the age of 16, Eidig trained with a forester in Stelle. After his apprenticeship, he started his job as a hunter with a forester at Gut Borstel near Winsen . During this time he also noticed that the feudal hunting industry is not interested in the keepers and certainly not in the game damage that farmers suffer every year. In this way, Eidig becomes a game shooter to help the rural population.

Soon Eidig was being hunted by foresters, gendarmes and soldiers. Under the increasing pressure of persecution, he moved his hunting area north of the Elbe, took up residence in Hamburg's Geesthacht and hunted in what was then the Danish Sachsenwald . Mostly he escaped with the help of peasants who hid him. But he didn't always succeed, so that he was arrested and had to be incarcerated more often. Somehow, however, he managed to escape again and again. Since 1834 Eidig was searched for and declared outlawed.

Finally, the Danish and Hanover governments offered him 100 thalers each if he would leave the country. Eidig accepted this offer and in 1835 he emigrated to New York via Hamburg . He died in New York in 1836 or 1837. His widow Katharina Margaretha (née Petersen) returned to Hamburg in April 1837 with their son Franz Werner (* 10.6.1836 in New York).
