Hans Freilinger

Hans Freilinger (born January 1, 1925 in St. Martin im Innkreis ; † May 17, 2012 ) was an Austrian carpenter , plasterer , sculptor , bronze caster and gallery owner .

Live and act

Freilinger began sculpting in 1940 , but first had to complete an apprenticeship as a carpenter and then attended the Hallstatt Wood School in Hallstatt . In 1943 he had to join the Wehrmacht , came back from Soviet captivity with a serious wound and continued his training as a sculptor with Josef Furthner in Zell an der Pram . For economic reasons, he went 1950/1951 to England , where he Theater - props anfertigte. After his return he found employment as a plasterer in the restoration of the Salzburg Cathedral and was able to attend the School of Seeing at the Salzburg Summer Academy , which was then directed by Oskar Kokoschka and Giacomo Manzù . Manzù encouraged Freilinger to pursue an academic education, which he completed at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Hans Andre and which he completed in 1960. From 1964 he lived and worked in Krems an der Donau . But he is buried at his birthplace St. Martin.

From 1967 he exhibited his works in his own gallery on Hohen Markt together with works by numerous other contemporary Austrian artists. The artist renovated the listed, dilapidated object, which in Gothic times belonged to the Lower Bavarian monastery of Sankt Veit , over a period of around 20 years. The artist was married to Helene from 1966, with whom he turned the building into an open meeting place. Born in the Innviertel, he was also a member of the Innviertel Artists' Guild .

From 1973 to 1979 he also had a studio in Bologna , where he made contacts with well-known artists and learned about new casting techniques for the production of bronze castings .
