Hans-Joachim Gernentz (born August 16, 1918 in Rostock ; † November 22, 1997 there ) was a German linguist .

Hans-Joachim Gernentz was born in 1918 as the son of Wilhelm Gernentz (1890–1969) and Helene Gernentz, b. Lierse (1891-?) Born. After graduating from high school in 1937, he went to the Reich Labor Service in the same year and from 1937 to 1945 did his military service in the Wehrmacht with an armored force , most recently with the military rank of Oberwachtmeister . In 1945 he was taken prisoner by the Soviets .

From 1946 to 1951, Hans-Joachim Gernentz studied German and history at the University of Rostock . From 1950 to 1951 he worked as a research assistant at the University of Rostock, where he passed the state examination for teaching at high schools in 1951 . After a brief activity as a teacher in 1951 in Kühlungsborn , he worked as a lecturer from 1951 to 1983. After the scientific postgraduate 1953 he was in 1954 at the Rostock alma mater with a thesis entitled Social views and demands in the early Middle High German spiritual poetry science to Dr. phil. PhD. From 1952 to 1957 he was a part-time mentor in Rostock for the distance learning course for secondary school teachers. In 1957 Hans Joachim Gernentz became a perception lecturer for the German language and older German literature. From 1958 to 1960 he was a lecturer at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald . In 1960 he became a lecturer; after his habilitation as Dr. phil. habil. in 1960 with a work entitled Forms and Functions of Epic Speeches and Speech Scenes in German Epic Poetry from 1150 to 1200 , he was Professor of German Language and Older German Literature in Rostock from 1961. From 1963 to 1965 he was a visiting professor for German philology at the University of Warsaw .

In the self-administration of the German Institute of Rostock University he held the following functions: 1959–1963 Head of the German Language and Older German Literature Department, 1959–1963 Head of the Low German and Dutch Department, 1962–1963 Head of German Studies, 1965–1968 Head of the German Language and Older German Literature Department , 1965–1968 Head of the Low German and Dutch department and from 1968 Head of the German Studies Department.

From 1955 to 1960, Hans-Joachim Gernentz was a lay judge at the Rostock District Court, from 1959 to 1960 a member of the Fritz Reuter Committee of the GDR , from 1961 to 1963 a member of the Weimar Posts editorial team , from 1967 to 1971 a member of the WZUR (G series) editorial team, from 1965 Member of the Weimar Posts editorial board, from 1966 member of the publishing board of Hinstorff Verlag Rostock and of the publishing board of Union-Verlag and from 1980 member of the Martin Luther Committee of the GDR.

In 1983 he retired.
