First term as Lord Mayor

On January 10, 1972, he was elected for the first time as mayor. Notable events in his first term of office were the administrative and territorial reforms . In their train, the previously independent municipalities of Mittelbuchen , Großauheim with Wolfgang , Klein-Auheim and Steinheim were added as new districts of Hanau between 1972 and 1974. The new building areas Tümpelgarten and Weststadt, which had already begun under his predecessor, Herbert Dröse , were completed and various school and sports halls were built. A whole series of unrestricted level crossings on the streets, which led from the urban area opened up in the 19th century over the railway lines that almost completely surround Hanau, have been replaced by level overpasses and underpasses.

On January 9, 1984, he was voted out of office by a newly formed coalition of the CDU and FDP . He was succeeded by Helmut Kuhn . In the following years, Hans Martin worked as a freelance lawyer.

Second term as Lord Mayor

In the local elections of March 1985, the majority changed in favor of the SPD. Helmut Kuhn was voted out as Lord Mayor and Hans Martin was re-elected Lord Mayor on June 10, 1985. During his second term in office, town houses were opened in several parts of the city, as well as the large sports hall named after August Schärttner and the Steinheim Castle Museum .

On June 30, 1994, Hans Martin retired at his own request. In the same year he was made an honorary citizen of the city of Hanau.
