The Steinheim Castle Museum is a historical and archaeological museum in Steinheim Castle in the old town of Hanau-Steinheim . It is one of the museums of the city of Hanau and is dedicated to regional prehistory and early history , the Roman era and the history of the city of Steinheim.

History of the house

After the regional reform in Hesse in 1974 (incorporation of Steinheim and Großauheim into Hanau), a reorganization of the museum landscape became necessary. The museums in Großauheim and Steinheim were created in the care of the Hanau museum administration . In Steinheim there had been a museum of the local homeland and history association since 1929 .

After extensive restoration work and archaeological investigations, the first departments were opened in December 1986. The museum took over the pre- and early history department of the Historical Museum Hanau , particularly held by the foundation since its traditionally active in archaeological Altkreis Hanau Historical Society Hanauer was compiled. The permanent exhibition was designed by Sabine Wolfram , today's director of the State Museum of Archeology in Chemnitz . The history of the castle is exhibited on the upper floor together with the local history of Steinheim.

The dungeon of the castle can be climbed on guided tours.

Premises

Most of the museum's permanent exhibition is located in the wing of the main building on the mains side in the Electoral Mainz Castle. It is possible to climb the keep as part of a guided tour. The battlements of the tower offer a good view of large parts of the Rhine-Main area . The castle courtyard is occasionally used for museum educational purposes. In the stables changing special exhibitions the museum.

collection

The museum's collection is structured chronologically and begins with the oldest human finds on the ground floor. The museum consists of the Old and New Stone Age , Bronze Age , Iron Age , Roman Age , Early Middle Ages , castle and chateau history and local history departments.

The museum also offers an extensive museum educational program. This includes, among other things, "Living and Working in the Stone Age", "Cooking according to Roman recipes" and "Baking bread in a clay oven".

Stone chamber grave from the Bruchköbel forest

ground floor

The exhibition in the first rooms on the ground floor contrasts the Middle and Paleolithic hunters and gatherers with the way of life and economy of the Neolithic Age. This is accompanied by a film about the oldest people and a large model of a linear ceramic settlement.

The Bronze Age section particularly shows grave finds from the old district of Hanau , including those from the “Töngeswald” barrow field near Maintal-Hochstadt , “Galgentanne” near Steinheim and a stone chamber grave belonging to a cemetery that was destroyed during the construction of the Hanau-Nord motorway exit ( A66 ). From the late Urnfield period there are depot finds from the Hanau Dunlop site and from Hochstadt.

The finds from the Iron Age are not as numerous compared to the eras before and after. They are dedicated to iron processing and the topic of the ethnic affiliation of the inhabitants of the region to the Celts or Teutons .

The Roman department is represented with particularly high-quality finds. The eye-catcher is the coin treasure from the vicus of Hanau-Salisberg . From the Mainknie on the Steinheimer side there are numerous militaria finds, possibly a deposit from the time of the Limes falls . While the two other forts in the Hanau city area ( Kesselstadt fort and Neuwirtshaus small fort ) brought only a few finds, the excavation work of the Hanau History Association resulted in a particularly large number of pieces from the neighboring Limes Fortress Rückingen and Großkrotzenburg . In addition to finds from these forts, the collection contains some items from the civil settlement on Salisberg, apart from the coin treasure, a receipt on a small Roman writing tablet is worth highlighting.

A mithraeum with the revolving relief from Rückingen was recreated in a cellar vault of the castle . Some inscriptions complement this stone collection.

First floor

The prehistory and early history section is completed in the first rooms of the upper floor by the early Middle Ages, represented by an important equestrian grave from Windecken (7th century) and a rich burial from the 8th century, which was discovered in Dörnigheim . The way of life and economy of this time are recreated through replicas and some original objects.

A large part of the upper floor is occupied by the building history of the palace as the Electorate of Mainz. A sandstone column with a capital (around 1220/50) and some stove tiles are exhibited. A complete inventory from the end of the 18th century gives an insight into the household effects of the official seat ( Amt Steinheim ) in Steinheim Castle.

In the town history section there is a model of the town of Steinheim from around 1560. This is contrasted with views of the town by Matthäus Merian and Daniel Meisner (17th century), Anton Radl (19th century) and photographs from the early 20th century. The history of the church is illustrated by footsteps on the Steinheimer Kreuzweg . Some exhibits from the local tobacco and printing industry from the time of industrialization are shown.
