Hans Mauer (born February 28, 1879 in Vienna ; † 1962 there ) was an Austrian sculptor .

Life

Mauer began to carve wood during school days. At the age of 15, he modeled an image of a wandering boy out of wax, which was given a place of honor in the 1894 anniversary exhibition (Vienna Rotunda ) in the youth department .

Hans Mauer began his training as a sculptor at the Vienna State Trade School , where the famous architect and town planner Camillo Sitte was his teacher. From 1901 to 1909 Mauer studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts , where he was taught by equally well-known teachers, namely Edmund von Hellmer , Hans Bitterlich , Carl Kundmann and Caspar von Zumbusch . If art historical research knows relatively little about the biography of Hans Mauer, his works, which are still preserved today, are all the more well-known and present. B. the monument of Marco d'Aviano in front of the Capuchin Church in Vienna . Portrait busts of well-known personalities such as those of Emperor Karl I , Empress Zita , Princess Adelheid and Field Marshal Hermann Kövess von Kövesshaza were his specialty. Two portrait busts from his hand adorn the Court of Honor of the University of Vienna , namely that of the philosopher and psychologist Friedrich Jodl and that of the lawyer and legal philosopher Karl Anton Freiherr von Martini .

Mauer had his studio at Währinger Straße 5–7 in Vienna's 9th district , where he also created his most famous work, namely the monument to Marco d'Aviano. But his works are not only present in his hometown Vienna, but above all in Baden near Vienna , such as the Herme of Ludwig van Beethoven in the park in front of the Sauerhof , a Lanner - Strauss group for the spa park there or the Komzak -schreiber - Ziehrer monument there. Hans Mauer, who still lived in Vienna in 1956, stayed in Italy several times.
