Joseph Lewinsky

Joseph Lewinsky (born September 20, 1835 in Vienna ; † February 27, 1907 there ) was an Austrian actor.
Life
Joseph Lewinsky came from a family of craftsmen; his father was a furrier. He completed his school days at the Schottengymnasium in his hometown. During this time, he also served as a choirboy for the Schottenstift , to which his school was attached. In 1852, with the help of the Burgtheater's extra series inspector , Wilhelm Just , he made his debut there as an extra.
Lewinsky worked his way up and on May 17, 1855 he had his successful debut at the Theater an der Wien in the play The Journalist . From autumn 1855 he had an engagement at the Stadttheater Troppau and in the summer of the following year he moved to Bielitz . From November 1856 to March 27, 1858 he was a member of the Brno Theater ensemble ; He had his greatest success there in the role of "Kreutzers".
The actor Heinrich Marr saw him there and drew Heinrich Laube's attention to Lewinsky in 1858 . He had him audition and then signed Lewinsky until 1861. On May 4, 1858 he was seen for the first time on the stage of the Burgtheater in the role of "Franz Moor" in Schiller's Robbers . The audience was enthusiastic and theater critics, especially Prince Konstanty Adam Czartoryski's sons , celebrated him enthusiastically in their theater newspaper. When his contract was fulfilled in 1861, Lewinsky immediately became a member of the Hofburgtheater for life.
In 1861 he made some notable guest appearances in Munich and Breslau . In the year of his 30th birthday, Lewinsky was honored - with effect from January 22, 1865 - by imperial decree with the title "Real Court Actor". In 1875 Lewinsky married his colleague and actress Olga Precheisen in Vienna for the second time . The actress and opera singer Elsa Lewinsky comes from this marriage .
Lewinsky worked as an actor at the court theater until the end of his life, interrupted only by a few guest performances, including in Moscow and St. Petersburg . In addition to his main work as an actor, he also worked as a director at times and appeared on various soirées as a declamator . Sound recordings of this activity have also been preserved.
Joseph Lewinsky died on February 27, 1907 at the age of 71 and found his final resting place in the evangelical cemetery Vienna- Simmering (I, 489). His wife Olga Precheisen is also buried there. In 1920 the Lewinskygasse in Vienna- Ottakring (16th district) was named after him.
