Hans Venedey

Hans Venedey (born November 21, 1902 in Lucerne ; † January 9, 1969 in Konstanz ) was a German lawyer and politician ( SPD ).

Life

education

Venedey was born into a middle-class legal family. He was the son of Martin Venedey and the grandson of Jacob Venedey . His brothers are Hermann Venedey , Jakob Venedey, Gustav Venedey and Michael Venedey .

After graduating from high school in Konstanz in 1922 (today: Alexander-von-Humboldt-Gymnasium Konstanz ), he studied law and political science in Freiburg im Breisgau , then joined his father's office as a lawyer and worked as a criminal defense lawyer . During his studies he was a member of the Alemannia Freiburg fraternity from 1922 to 1925 .

Engagement during the Weimar Republic

Venedey joined the SPD in 1926 and was a member of the Reichsbanner Schwarz-Rot-Gold during the Weimar Republic . He was also chairman of the Iron Front in Constance. Venedey was a councilor for the city of Konstanz from 1929 to 1933.

Persecution under National Socialism

After the National Socialists came to power, Hans Venedey protested on March 6, 1933 against the swastika flag on the Konstanz town hall. Venedey was briefly taken into " protective custody " on March 14, 1933 for political reasons . His father Martin Venedey , who was a member of the Baden Estates Assembly and the Baden State Parliament from 1891 to 1921 , obtained his release. On March 21, 1933, Hans Venedey's license to practice as a lawyer at the Constance District Court was withdrawn.

Emigration and internment

Before being arrested again, Hans Venedey emigrated to Paris via Basel in July 1933 and to Zurich in 1934. Because of the non-renewed residence permit for Switzerland, he returned to Paris in 1936, where he campaigned for the rights of German emigrants from 1936. After the German occupation of northern France, he was interned in Paris in 1940, then in Le Vernet in the unoccupied zone of the Vichy government . In 1942 he was able to flee via Lyon to Switzerland, where he joined the resistance group “ Movement Free Germany ”. He returned to Germany in August 1945, worked as a lawyer in Konstanz from 1946 and later as a lawyer and notary in Wiesbaden .

Political party

After the Second World War , he rejoined the SPD. In 1946 he was expelled from the party after he and the Hessian Minister of Labor Oskar Müller had previously spoken out in favor of expanding cooperation with the KPD . From September 1947 to January 1949 he was a representative of the Western Zone KPD on the SED party executive .

Rehabilitation

Venedey served from October 26, 1945 to August 7, 1946 as Minister of State of the Interior in the government of Greater Hesse ( Geiler cabinet ) led by Prime Minister Karl Geiler and appointed by the US military administration . During his tenure, he was primarily involved in building the internal administration and drafting the state constitution.

His application for compensation and compensation for loss of earnings during emigration was rejected and only recognized after an objection in 1959.

In May 2012, a stumbling block was laid for Hans Venedey in the courtyard of the Konstanz town hall in Kanzleistraße, where he worked as SPD councilor from 1930 to 1933, in memory of his persecution during National Socialism.
