geography

location

The Hardtberg is located in the Taunus Nature Park between Königstein im Taunus in the northwest and the Mammolshain district in the southeast. The state road  3327 , which connects the two villages, runs over its north and east flanks . This meets federal road 8 northwest of the elevation , which in turn meets federal road 455 a little north of it . The KVB's Königstein Clinic is located on the western slope of the mountain . To the north you can reach Königstein via the Hardtbergweg and the Opel Zoo to the north-east .

Natural allocation

The Hardtberg belongs to the natural spatial main unit group Taunus (No. 30), in the main unit Vordertaunus (300) to the natural area Königsteiner Taunusfuß (300.20).

Hardtberg Tower

On the top of the mountain, the Taunus Club built an iron lookout tower in 1899 , which was renovated in 1999 by the city of Königstein and raised to 14 m. It was the successor model of a wooden tower in the same place, which was dilapidated and was demolished. The tower, which is around 15 m high with parapet, offers a wide view of the Rhine-Main plain, although the view is often restricted by the surrounding trees. The tower has been closed since December 2012 because the stairs are badly corroded and the load-bearing capacity is no longer guaranteed. As of August 2015, of the 80 steps of the spiral staircase, the lower 10 steps including the handrail are missing, and the tower is fenced with a high metal grille all around. Refurbishment would cost 90,000 euros, and a new building (with a height above the treetops) would cost 150,000 to 180,000 euros. A few years earlier, the city of Königstein rejected the installation of mobile radio transmitters on the tower. As a result, a separate transmitter mast was built in the neighboring Bad Soden area. Therefore, a share of the cost of a mobile phone company in maintaining the tower is not to be expected.

Sweet chestnuts

The mountain is covered with extensive groves of sweet chestnuts . The sweet chestnut adventure trail on the southern slope of the mountain provides information about the culture. The Rhine-Main Regional Park took up this motif with the "seat chestnuts". It is a seating area. The wooden “benches” are laid out in the shape of chestnuts, which were renewed in 2009. Further down, the Hardtgrund joins, which merges into the Kronthal Quellenpark .

Forest garden

Around 1775 (according to other sources as early as 1720) the forest garden or plant garden on the southern slope of the Hardtberg was created. It was a Kurmainzerische nursery . The facility was 133 paces long and 133 paces wide (according to other sources 100 by 200 meters) and was about 300  m high. A directory from 1842 listed 85 different plants that were propagated here. The domain forest treasury of the Duchy of Nassau recorded 400 gulden income and 300 gulden expenses from the forest garden that year . The first fir trees of the Taunus were raised in the forest garden . Fruit trees were also part of the offer. A delivery of eight pear trees and two Ostheimer cherry trees of 20 Kreuzers each to Hans Christoph Ernst von Gagern in 1827 is documented. With the death of the chief forester Emil Schwab in 1889, the maintenance of the garden was stopped. It became overgrown and was increasingly forgotten. Today, the educational forest trail on Hardtberg reminds of the forest garden and the trees that have grown there.
