Harry Crews

Harry Eugene Crews (born June 7, 1935 in Bacon County , Georgia , † March 28, 2012 in Gainesville , Florida ) was an American writer , who was already known through his debut novel The Gospel Singer (1968) and in his In some autobiographical books, he often describes grotesque characters and is considered a representative of the biting satirical literature of the southern states (“ Southern Gothic ”).

Life

After attending school, Crews, who grew up in difficult and poor family circumstances in rural Georgia, did his military service in the US Marine Corps during the Korean War . He then studied at the University of Florida and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA).

In 1968 he published his debut novel The Gospel Singer , and already in this book he described numerous freaky, unsaved and broken characters. This work was followed by numerous other novels such as Car (1972), and in which Crews described a man who ate his car in small portions. In the published 1976 book A Feast of Snakes he wrote an annual forming rattlesnakes - Rodeo , which takes a whole village caught.

Crews, who repeatedly by excesses due to his alcoholism noticed described his own life in his 1978 under the title A Childhood: The Biography of a Place published memoirs . In addition to numerous other novels, some of which were also published in German translation , Classic Crews: A Harry Crews Reader (1993) also published an anthology and the two novellas Where Does One Go When There's No Place Left to Go? (1995) and An American Family: The Baby with the Curious Markings (2006).

In addition to his literary activities crews also worked as a lecturer in literature and creative writing at Broward Community College in Broward County in Florida and at the Wright State University in Dayton active.

He also played two supporting roles , one in Indian Runner (1991) by Sean Penn with David Morse , Viggo Mortensen and Charles Bronson and himself in the documentary Searching for the Wrong-Eyed Jesus (2003) by Andrew Douglas .
