Harry Krebs (born December 30, 1919 in Dresden ; † October 11, 2007 in Berlin ) was a German politician ( SED ), trade union official of the FDGB , deputy mayor of Berlin (East) and councilor for finances.

Childhood and youth

Harry Krebs was born as the son of the tailor Fritz Krebs and the maid Elisabeth Krebs, b. Richter, born. From 1926 to 1934 he attended the 47th elementary school in Dresden-Strehlen , was a member of the YMCA (Christian Association of Young Men) from 1929 to 1934 and finished elementary school at Easter 1934 with the completion of the 8th grade. From 1934 to September 1937 he completed a commercial apprenticeship at the Max Friedrich Senf mustard factory and also attended the Dresden Commercial College.

Activity as an accountant

After completing his apprenticeship, he was unemployed for six months, then in 1938 found a job as a financial accountant in the Hilmar Jentzsch grocery wholesaler in Lutherstadt Wittenberg , which he soon had to give up for health reasons. He returned to Dresden and after his recovery worked from April 1939 to June 1941 as a financial accountant for the Deutsche Reichspostreklame Dresden.

Military service and internment

In the Second World War he was drafted into the Navy. He joined the Marine Artillery (9th EMAA Adlershof) on June 30, 1941 and was employed as a radio operator. After being wounded near Murmansk in March 1944, he was admitted to the military hospital in Bad Pyrmont , then transferred to reserve hospital 2 in Dresden, released in October 1944 as a substitute troop and awarded the wound badge. He experienced the end of the war in May 1945 as a corporal at a radio measuring station in Dahme (Holstein) . From May 2 to June 30, 1945, he was interned in the UK in Schleswig-Holstein . He was able to escape from the camp and worked for a short time as a farm worker in the Grevesmühlen district in Mecklenburg .

New start in Dresden, studies in Leipzig

As soon as he found out that his parents were still alive, he returned to Dresden in October 1945. He found a job as a financial accountant at Drewag (Stadtwerke Dresden AG), which he took up on November 16. He joined the SPD on November 1 and soon became secretary of the 18th district of the SPD in Dresden. After the unification congress in April 1946 he became a member of the SED . In May 1946 Drewag delegated him to a five-month preparatory course for university studies (evening school) in Dresden, which he completed in September with the special maturity examination. On October 1, 1946, he began to study economics at the University of Leipzig , which he completed in October 1949 with the state examination as a graduate economist. During his studies he became a member of the student advisory board and in 1947 co-founder and 1st chairman of the FDGB university group at the Leipzig universities and technical colleges. In the spring of 1948 he completed the 2nd special course for students at the party college "Karl Marx" in Kleinmachnow . In July 1949 he married Anita Gruner, Paul Gruner's daughter .

Federal Executive of the FDGB

After completing his studies, he was employed on November 7, 1949 as secretary for educational issues and head of the culture and education department at the FDGB federal executive committee. On March 15, 1950 he became personal assistant to Ernst Zöllner , Economic Secretary of the FDGB Federal Executive, after the III. Congress of the FDGB in September 1950 Personal advisor to Herbert Warnke , Chairman of the FDGB Federal Executive Board. From September 1951 to May 1953 he was secretary for work and wages of the FDGB Greater Berlin . 1951–1954 he completed the second three-year course in distance learning at the SED party college "Karl Marx" in Kleinmachnow with a degree as a political economist. From 1951 to 1959 he was a member of the Berlin District Board of the FDGB.

Deputy Mayor of Berlin and City Council, President of the Boxing Association

On June 1, 1953 Harry Krebs was appointed deputy mayor and was responsible on the one hand for the labor and vocational training department and on the other for the local industry and craft department. In addition, he became chairman of the supervisory board of Bewag (Berliner Städtische Elektrizitätswerke AG). Altogether he was a member of the Magistrate of Greater Berlin for 15 years , from 1953 to 1968. Already on June 17th there was a change: Harry Krebs had to give up the area of ​​work and professional training and was immediately responsible for the area of ​​trade and supply as well as for the area of ​​local industry and craft. As deputy for trade and supply, he had to take over organization and responsibility for the exchange of money in Berlin in October 1957. He was then chairman of the commission for the abolition of food cards in Berlin (May 1958).

In April 1958 there was another change of responsibility: Harry Krebs became deputy mayor for finances and head of finances at the magistrate of Greater Berlin, thus de facto city treasurer of Berlin. In addition, he became a member of the economic council of the city council. He was in charge of the finance department until 1966.

From March 1958 he was a member of the presidium of the German Boxing Association of the GDR , in May 1958 he became the first president of the boxing association. After his exemplary organization and implementation of the extraordinary AIBA Congress (Association Internationale de Boxe Amateure) in Leipzig in October 1958, Harry Krebs was elected as a member of the AIBA Executive Committee. From 1958 to 1962 he was also a member of the German Gymnastics and Sports Association (DTSB) and was awarded the DTSB's Golden Badge of Honor in 1958.

On October 6, 1959, he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze. He held the position of boxing president until May 1961. His tasks also included taking part in the preparation for the Summer Olympics in Rome (August / September 1960) and he and his wife were allowed to take part as a guest.

In addition to his role as deputy for finances, he was assigned the task of deputy for health and social services from 1961 to 1964. During his term of office the establishment of the Städtisches Klinikum Berlin-Buch fell on January 1st, 1963. In the same year he was awarded the badge of honor by the Karl Marx University .

From February 1966 to 1967 he was Deputy Mayor for the area of ​​organization / instructor and management, and from 1967 to 1968 he was deputy for the area of ​​trade and supply. He was recalled at his own request.

Director of the Berlin-Buch Clinic and retired

From December 1, 1968 to December 31, 1978 Harry Krebs was employed as director of planning and economics at the Städtische Klinikum Berlin-Buch, which he co-founded, and from January 1, 1979 to May 1982 as director of management and education.

In June 1982, at the age of 63, he took a disability pension. In retirement in 1983 he took on the role of honorary chairman of the revision committee of the district of the people's solidarity , and continued as chairman of the Society for German-Soviet Friendship (DSF) in his residential area in Berlin-Friedrichshain .

Harry Krebs died on October 11, 2007 in Berlin and is buried in Friedrichshain.
