Harry Schwarzwälder was the younger brother of the Bremen historian Herbert Schwarzwälder (1919–2011). He worked as an administrative employee in the Office for Road and Bridge Construction of the City of Bremen and was responsible for Bremen's Weser bridges in the construction department for 36 years .

Since the mid-1960s, Schwarzwälder worked alongside and later in retirement as a local researcher and mainly carried out basic research on various topics in the history of the city of Bremen . He submitted numerous studies on Bremen's history, often self-published or in handwritten form. These include "ten volumes on the history of the Bürgerpark as well as a work on the senators , mayors and presidents of the Senate ." In the Bremisches Jahrbuch , the historical specialist journal of Bremen published by the Bremen Historical Society together with the Bremen State Archives , in 1978 until 2010 published several times both contributions by him and references to his work. His book from 1968 on the Weser bridges in Bremen is still considered a standard work today .

In addition, he set up an extensive private archive of historical documents as well as a collection of historical photographs and postcards on Bremen's history, with the help of which he documented his research and from which he partly found the Bremen State Archives and the Bremen State and University Library as well as other institutions and Served museums such as the Focke Museum in Bremen and supported exhibitions etc. with loans.

In addition, Schwarzwälder has been collecting old and new, sometimes "strange" bottles of various types, colors, shapes, origins, materials, uses and times, etc. for decades, supported by his wife , and has a private collection of more than 6,000 Exhibits. Parts of his bottle collection have been exhibited to the public several times, for example in the Heimatmuseum Schloss Schönebeck in Bremen- Vegesack in 1992, in the Museum Soltau in the Lower Saxon city of Soltau and in the Focke Museum in Bremen.

In his hometown of Bremen, he was committed to preserving local and regional history and the preservation of important historical objects. In 1999, for example, when he erected two restored sandstone lions' heads below the Wilhelm-Kaisen-Brücke on the promenade “ Untere Schlachte ”, he contributed to the correct historical classification - they were originally used to decorate the bulges on the river pillar on the old town side of the 1945 blown up and the Great Weser Bridge, which was demolished in 1960, and turned up again in 1998 during dredging work in the Weser . In 2000, Schwarzwälder got involved in the preparation of events on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the historic Bremen – Tarmstedt small railway (popularly known as "Jan Reiners") and, among other things, controlled a small-scale model of the locomotive of the Jan Reiners railway that he had recreated for exhibition purposes at. In 2008 he worked at the district archive of Bremer Neustadt on the creation of the exhibition “Bremen's Weser Bridges through the ages”, which was shown there from the end of the same year. On the initiative of him and the local politician Helmut Kasten, the advisory board of the Bremen district of Gröpelingen , in which the Black Forests lived with his family all his life, had a replica of a historical landmark from 1743 set up on the Schwarzen Weg in 2009 .

For his work, Schwarzwälder was awarded the Bremen Prize for Local History Research in 1978 and 1999 , and in 2014 he was honored with the prize for his life's work advertised by Wittheit zu Bremen and nine other affiliated associations :

"The basic research he does is hard-working, wonderful work."

- Hans Kloft : Vice President of Wittheit zu Bremen , April 15, 2014

Harry Schwarzwälder was married and had two children with his wife Heike. He died in 2019 at the age of 90 and was buried in the Waller Friedhof .
