Ali Haurand (born November 15, 1943 as Alfred Josef Antonius Haurand in Viersen ; † May 28, 2018 there ) was a German jazz musician , television presenter and music producer. He played in numerous groups, projects and international touring line-ups. He worked as the responsible festival manager of several major jazz events beyond Viersen, as well as a double bass player and band leader .

Live and act

After completing a pastry and commercial apprenticeship, Haurand studied at the Folkwang School and the Rheinische Musikhochschule from 1966 to 1973 . He initially played with his own trio and since 1967 in the trio and quintet of the pianist George Maycock . In 1968/68 he also toured with Philly Joe Jones , Jacques Pelzer , René Thomas and Jan Huydts . He has also performed with Ben Webster , Don Byas , John Handy , Bobby Jones and Wilton Gaynair . This was followed by groups such as Third Eye , the European Jazz Quintet (with Leszek Zadlo , Gerd Dudek , Alan Skidmore and Pierre Courbois ) and, together with Alan Skidmore and Tony Oxley, the trio SOH . With his long-time companions, the saxophonist Gerd Dudek and the pianist Rob van den Broeck , Haurand played in the formation The Trio . Since 1982, the European Jazz Ensemble , which he founded from the European Jazz Quintet and repeatedly presented in new line-up variants, has been a gathering place for well-known German and European jazz musicians, such as Allan Botschinsky , Stan Sulzmann , Joachim Kühn and Daniel Humair . In addition, projects such as the Trumpet Summit or the meeting of the European Jazz Ensemble with the members of the Indian Khan Family were created . In the 2000s he participated in several jazz & lyric projects.

For several years Haurand u. a. in a duo with the Prague flautist Jiří Stivín . Since 1994 he has worked on projects with the pantomime Milan Sládek . In 2008 he gave a concert for the Czech President Václav Klaus in Prague with František Uhlíř , Petr Dvorsky, Vit Svec and Tomas Baros .

For decades he was a moderator and consultant at the WDR television jazz editorial team, and for twelve years he was artistic director of the Düsseldorf Jazz Rally . Since 1987 he was the founder and organizer of the Viersener Jazz Festival , which he directed until 2014. For over 20 years he has been organizing the jazz concerts in the Weberhaus in Süchteln with the jazz club.

Honors

• In 2005, Haurand was appointed Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres by the French minister of culture .
• In 2011, Haurand was awarded the silver city plaque by the city of Viersen.
• In 2016 the cellar in the Viersener Festhalle was named in his honor Ali Haurand Keller (in neon letters above the entrance).
