history

Heber was first mentioned in 1123 as Hathebere (heath settlement on a slope). The place belonged to the Diocese of Verden until 1648, then changed under the rule of Sweden, Kingdom of Hanover , Empire of France and again Hanover. In 1866 Heber became Prussian .

From 1839 a stagecoach line ran via Heber and a post office was set up in the village. The mills (mustard mill, watermill , windmill ) from Heber also gained greater regional importance . After the unsuccessful operation of a water mill, the windmill was built in 1825,

In 1960, Prince Philip visited the site when a British regiment was holding a maneuver there. The British military was stationed in Heber and the surrounding area for decades.

On March 1, 1974, Heber was incorporated into the municipality of Schneverdingen.

The Hillern landfill made headlines across Germany in 2011 when it became known that construction rubble from the former Stade nuclear power plant had been brought there.
