The Roman Catholic pilgrimage church on the Holy Mountain (or pilgrimage church on the Holy Mountain ) is located on the Holy Mountain north of the village of Hautzendorf in the municipality of Kreuttal in the Mistelbach district in Lower Austria . It is consecrated to St. Lambert and, together with the local church in Hautzendorf, belongs to the parish of Hautzendorf in the Wolkersdorf dean's office in the vicariate of Unter dem Manhartsberg in the Archdiocese of Vienna . The building is under monument protection ( list entry ). It is considered one of the oldest churches in Lower Austria.

Location description

The church stands on the Heiligenberg, far north of Hautzendorf, on a wooded hill. It is surrounded by the former churchyard wall with a gable and crenellated arched portal from the 17th century.

history

The Holy Mountain was first mentioned in 1178 in two deed of donation in the land register of Klosterneuburg Monastery during the reign of Duke Leopold V of Babenberg . The founding of the parish of Heiligenberg is likely to have taken place in Passau in the 12th century . In the parish register of Passau Bishop Otto von Lonsdorf , which was created from 1254 to 1256, it is written: “[…] item in monte sancto villa tota com ecclesi '[…]” (German:' […] Then a whole house on the Holy Mountain with the Church [...] ')

Various documents also point to a " Veste Heiligenberg " at a later date . In 1571 the church is described as a ruin, which stands on a meadow in the middle of a 15 yoke pond. The abandoned village of Heiligenberg, which is located at the foot of the Heiligenberg, is mentioned for the last time in the 15th century. It was probably destroyed in the course of the first Turkish siege of Vienna in 1529.

According to a legend, the place was destroyed by devastating floods, which occurred as a result of storms. Legend has it that this was the penalty for a high-spirited act by the local judge . After an argument with the priest friend, the local judge lured him into his house in the course of an accident . There the priest found a dead pig instead of a sick person. The downfall of the settlement from a flood hardened in the 1970s when bent reeds were found in the course of drainage work in the former pond field.

In 1690 the current church building was erected and again elevated to parish church.

The area of the parish of Heiligenberg extended over Heiligenberg, Hautzendorf and Traunfeld , but was very often not occupied by a priest because of its lack of income. The parish was mainly looked after by the dual parish Pillichsdorf - Ulrichskirchen , but sometimes also by priests from neighboring parishes. Only in 1724 was a separate vicar appointed, who had his seat in Traunfeld. In 1769 the consistory in Passau gave permission to build a church in Hautzendorf, which was also consecrated to St. Lambert. In the summer the services were held in the Heiligen-Berg-Kirche and in the winter from 1771 in the local chapel in Hautzendorf and from 1797 also in the church in Traunfeld. In 1844 both Hautzendorf and Traunfeld received their own local cemeteries. Until then, the residents of Hautzendorf were buried on the Holy Mountain. That is why the path leading to the church is still colloquially called the " path of the dead ".

On July 31, 1857, the church on the Holy Mountain received from Pope Pius IX. the altar privilege .

In 1890 the church was closed due to dilapidation. A committee formed as a result met in 1896 with the aim of restoring the church. The committee included clergy and many lay people from the surrounding villages. The church was restored around 1900. In 1961 the tower was restored. From 1971 to 1973 the church, again threatened with decay, was subjected to a thorough restoration. In 1998 the organ was completely renovated.
