Homesick for you, my green valley is an Austrian homeland film from 1960. Directed by Hermann Leitner . For the main actors Anita Gutwell and Rudolf Lenz , one of the dream couples of the German-speaking Heimatfilm of the 1950s, it was their seventh film together. It was their last collaboration.

The original title, under which the film was also shown in Austria, is: My father's house is in the mountains . The film premiered on December 21, 1960 in Würzburg . It premiered in Austria on January 13, 1961.

After four years of absence, Gabriela von Hübner is returning to the Sonnhof as a new veterinarian. Her grandfather, Wilhelm von Hübner, tells her that the estate has not fared very well in recent years when she expresses her amazement to her grandfather at how run-down everything looks.

When she again addresses the catastrophic conditions on the farm at a meal for which her grandfather also asked the current manager Fred Schantl, the latter feels personally offended and leaves the room with a flimsy excuse. Gabriela's grandfather then reproaches her.

During her further explorations on the estate and in the surrounding area, Gabriela discovers that the Liebmanns, the former manager couple, no longer live in the manager's house and is very surprised. Later she learns from the Liebmanns that they had to vacate the house for the new manager. Ms. Liebmann tearfully tells her that her son Andreas has accepted a job as an administrator in a sawmill in Canada and will probably not come back.

In the meantime, Schantl has an appointment with the local bank manager and finds a loan for himself by revealing his real plans as to why he is deliberately running down the estate. It shouldn't be the director's harm once he, Schantl, had the property in his possession.

Andreas Liebmann in Canada has received mail from home again. Between the lines he notices a strange sadness on the part of his parents and is worried. So he decides to take care of everything back home himself and discusses this with the owner of the sawmill Draga Adamicz. Draga asks him to come back quickly, her interest in the capable man is not only professional.

Liebmann is dismayed when he does not find the parents in the manager's house, his "parents" but in a far remote from the village Chaste . On the way to the parents' house, he meets Gabriela when both find shelter from a rain shower under a haystack, and of course they start talking. Gabriela quickly recognizes Anderl Liebmann, the son of the former estate manager. They both like each other immediately.

Frau Liebmann can only stammer “Our Anderl”, sobbing, when her son walks through the door and the father can hardly hide his great joy. In a conversation, the parents explain to him how it came about that they had to leave the estate. Schantl made sure of that. There he also learns that Schantl was the manager of Mr. von Sommersfeld before he started working at the Sonnhof. Von Sommersfeld and von Huebner often had arguments with each other, with Schantl once intervening when von Huebner went off with the butt of the rifle on Sommersfeld. And then came the news that Sommersfeld had had a fatal accident while hunting and that his universal heir was Schantl. Then the small estate of Sommersfeld was merged with the large Sonnhof, and Schantl became the new administrator.

Gabriela has another argument with her grandfather, who, strangely enough, always faces his irresponsible steward. The young woman meets Andreas again at a village festival and agrees to meet him for a walk the next day. There she opens her heart to him and tells of her grief. When Andreas promises to help her, she falls around his neck and the first kiss occurs between the two.

Since Gabriela's grandfather does not want her to interfere in the work of the manager, the only way out is to point out that, according to her mother's inheritance, she owns half of the Sonnhof and that she would like to manage her half together with Andreas. The grandfather cannot and does not want to deny his granddaughter this right. Of course, Schantl doesn't fit in with his plans at all. He tries to put Wilhelm von Huebner under pressure, whereby he suffers a fit of weakness. Even at the bedside he instigates a windy notary on his neck in order to get von Hübner to sign over a certain part of his property for him.

Anderl's father now tells him about a silver mine that belongs to Wilhelm von Huebner's possessions; he's pretty sure there are other minerals like magnesium and copper in there too. Perhaps that would be helpful in moving the run-down Sonnhof forward more quickly. On this occasion, Anderl tells his parents that he will not return to Canada, which makes them very happy. Andreas wants to take a closer look at the said tunnel and is in great danger - and again Schantl has his unclean fingers in the game. With the last of his strength, Andreas Liebmann manages to get to safety from the falling water. This leads to a misunderstanding. When Gabriela hurries to the scene of the accident full of worry, she sees a strange woman hugging and kissing "her Anderl". She turns away, disappointed. After the letter from her manager that he was not coming back, Draga Adamicz immediately got on the plane to change his mind. She is the "strange woman".

Andreas is informed by Rosa, the housekeeper at the Sonnhof, about an overheard conversation in which Wilhelm von Hübner revealed to the pastor why Schantl has such power over him. He learns that von Hübner is said to have shot someone and that Schantl is using it to blackmail him. Andreas really wants to find out what really happened back then and notices that Schantl persuaded Wilhelm von Hübner that he shot Sommersfeld while hunting. And that nobody would believe him that he had aimed at game, since the constant disputes between him and von Sommersfeld were well known. For his silence he made the old man dance to his tune. Andreas finds out that von Sommersfeld actually died of a stroke. The corpse had no gunshot wound.

When Andreas looked for the Huebners weapon that Schantl had taken from him at the time, there was a final fight between him and Schantl. Schantl - cornered - wants to shoot him. In the end, however, Schantl is arrested and given his just punishment. Gabriela recognizes her mistake and says to Rosa: "I'm so happy, he loves me". To which she replies: "Schatzl, you only know that today".

Not only does Wilhelm von Hübner listen with emotion to the priest's words as his granddaughter Gabriela and Andreas Liebmann step in front of the altar. A children's choir underlines the festive mood with the song “Love is Eternity, Love is Light” .
