Henry I , also known as Henry Lackland (* 21st March 1256 ; † 14. February 1318 ) from the gender of Askanier , was Margrave of Brandenburg and Landsberg .

Life

Heinrich was a son of Margrave Johann I of Brandenburg from his second marriage to Jutta, the daughter of Duke Albrecht I of Saxony . The origin of his name suffix "ohne Land" derives from the fact that Heinrich came from the younger branch of the Johanne line (Stendal line) and initially did not have his own refuge, as was intended for the older half-brothers or cousins of the Ottonian line . Heinrich was more than fifteen years younger than his half-brothers Johann II , Otto IV "with the arrow" and Konrad I and was excluded from governmental acts for a long time.

After the eldest half-brother Johann II died, Heinrich took part in the government of the country from 1294 and received - according to the excerpts of the Bohemian chronicler Přibík Pulkava - the land of Gelicz (Delitzsch) , which belonged to the Landsberg region . The Mark Landsberg was sold in 1290/91 by the Meissen Margrave Albrecht the Degenerate to the Margrave of Brandenburg. Since then, Heinrich has almost without exception included the title of Margrave of Brandenburg as well as that of Margrave of Landsberg in documents. In this role he waged various feuds with neighboring princes . From Magdeburg Archbishop Burchard II. Of Blankenburg he received the excommunication occupied.

In 1311 Heinrich had to cede the Palatinate Saxony with the castles Grillenberg near Sangerhausen and Raspenburg near Rastenberg to Saxony-Wittenberg . He also lost a feud with the Lusatian Margrave Dietrich IV.

After the death of Henry VII of Luxembourg , Heinrich was proposed by his nephew, Margrave Waldemar von Brandenburg , as the successor to the German royal throne . He himself seems to have refused, because he promised in a document to vote for Duke Friedrich the Beautiful or his brother Leopold . Nevertheless, he later elected Duke Ludwig of Bavaria as Roman-German king .

Heinrich died on February 14, 1318 at the age of 61.
