Heinrich von Haymerle
Baron Heinrich Karl von Haymerle (born December 7, 1828 in Vienna ; † October 10, 1881 there ) was an Austrian statesman and diplomat .
Life
Heinrich Karl von Haymerle, from an old German- Bohemian aristocratic family, completed his studies at the Imperial and Royal Oriental Academy in Vienna and was captured by the troops in October 1848, following the call of the Vienna student body to take up arms and only escaped execution under martial law through the intercession of Baron Alexander von Huebner with Field Marshal Windischgrätz .
In 1850 he was appointed adjunct interpreter at the Internunciatur (embassy) in Constantinople and promoted to third interpreter in 1854. In 1857 he was transferred to Athens as legation secretary, to Dresden in 1861 and to Frankfurt am Main in 1862 , where he witnessed the German Prince Congress.
After the Peace of Vienna in 1864 he was sent to Copenhagen as chargé d'affaires in order to re-establish diplomatic relations with Denmark, and in 1866 took part in the Austro-Prussian peace negotiations in Prague.
He then went to Berlin as an interim chargé d'affaires, worked for some time under Friedrich Ferdinand von Beust in the Foreign Ministry in Vienna, then at the Internunciatures in Constantinople, and received the legation post in Athens in December 1869, and in The Hague in 1872, where he also in 1876 was raised to the baron class.
After he had been employed for some time in the Foreign Ministry under Gyula Andrássy , he was appointed ambassador to Rome in January 1877 . In 1878 he was the third Austrian plenipotentiary at the Berlin Congress and on October 8, 1879, he was appointed Andrássy's successor, whose foreign policy he continued.
In particular he cultivated the alliance with Germany and endeavored to maintain peace in the East.
Haymerle's marriage to Therese, born Freiin von Bernus on December 19, 1867 had two children: Maria Karoline Wilhelmine (born October 25, 1868) and Franz Alexander (born September 15, 1874). Franz Alexander was married to the actress Liane Haid .
In 1894, Haymerlegasse was named after him in Vienna- Ottakring (16th district) .
