Gottlob Heinrich Leutemann (* October 8, 1824 in Großzschocher near Leipzig , † December 14, 1905 in Wittgensdorf near Chemnitz ) was an animal painter and draftsman, author and illustrator, whose depictions of zoo animals in the second half of the 19th century were popular.

life and work

Between 1838 and 1846 Leutemann attended the art academy in Leipzig , where he studied in particular with Bernhard von Neher . Under his direction he worked on the frescoes in Weimar Castle and on the cardboard boxes for the glass windows of the collegiate church in Stuttgart .

From 1850 he worked in Leipzig as an illustrator and author for magazines, including for the garden gazebo and the Illustrirte Zeitung , and produced articles for the Münchener Bilderbogen . Leutemann also illustrated numerous maps; He contributed drawings and colored plates to picture books for children about the country, people and animals. As an artist, however, he mainly devoted himself to drafting classic subjects , which were very popular with audiences during the early days . His main work includes the 36 steel engravings for the version of Reineke Fuchs by JE Hartmann, which appeared in Leipzig in 1855. From 1850 Leutemann produced a series of animal illustrations for animal stories, fanfold formats and a zoological atlas.

Through his acquaintance with Carl Hagenbeck , whom he is said to have advised to found his zoo, he produced numerous drawings of Hagenbeck's animal and folk shows , which were reproduced in print and distributed. Rare animals and their arrival in Hagenbeck's zoo were documented in pictures by him and artistically designed. Most of the animal drawings and prints are now in private collections.

Heinrich Leutemann went blind in 1895. A memorial exhibition was held in Leipzig in 1919. Leutemann's works are in public collections in Leipzig and Berlin .
